Places to Eat in Tehran

A popular story among my friends is based on the idea that there are some places in Tehran that should be visited. Visiting all these places is almost like a badge of honor.

For a while now I’ve tried to list this place and it’s no surprise that it’s a big list. So here is a list of 19 places that for some reason represent the quintessential eating of Tehran. I stopped at 19 because I’m sure there are more ideas at number 20! The list is in alphabetical order:

1. Akbar Mashti

The origins and origins of Iran’s ice cream are hotly debated. The saffron and rose water flavored ice cream was first served on Rey Street (southern Tehran) at a shop that is still in operation. But the real Akbar Mashti can be found on Shahrdari Street between Tajrish and Ghods Squares. And of course it’s just the beginning.

2. Bahar Kebab

At the end of Bahar street just before the intersection with Bahar-e-Shiraz street is undoubtedly one of Tehran’s best sources of minced (Koubideh) kebab. It’s not fancy but the combination of a hot kebab and fresh bread from the clay oven makes for a delicious meal.

3. Café Naderi

As one of the most famous restaurants/restaurants in Tehran, Café Naderi is respected for its “Chateaubriand” meat and its coffee selection. Café Naderi, once known as the hangout of Tehran, located on Jomhuri Street near Ferdowsi intersection, is now widely used to serve tourists and diplomats.

4. Estakhr Vanak

This simple and efficient restaurant is known for its spring chicken kebab. There seems to be nothing wrong with this, but somehow they manage to make better kebab than anywhere else in Tehran.

5. Feraidoon Sandwich

This popular sandwich shop is often referred to by an unappealing name (which will remain unused for now). They offer hot and cold sandwiches including chicken, steak and tongue. It is very famous for its large cut fries which are very good. The shop is located at the bottom of Eshgyar Street (aka Niloufar) near Khoramshahr Avenue and is immediately recognizable by its old billboard.

6. Dizisara (Iranshahr)

Considered by many to be the best place in Tehran for kebab (cooked meat), this restaurant is a place where people from different cultures come together to eat traditional side dishes. The service is at ligtht speed to handle the continuous queues of customers abroad. A particularly beautiful place to visit for non-Iranians. Dizisara is located on Azarshahr Street between Iranshahr Street and Gharani Street.

7. Dizi in Takhti Square

No one is sure what this place is called and no one bothers to ask. All you have to say is “Milk in Takhti square” and it sounds good. The restaurant is open for limited hours during lunch. Before lunch, the dizi is still cooking and by 2.00pm it is sold. Demand is high so you should go early. The actual location is on Vatani Street below the main car dealership.

8. Joseph Sandwiches

The small kitchen in this small shop (which is located in the same street as Feraidoon) can serve an amazing number of sandwiches in one day. The Olivier Salad sandwich is one of my favorites in Tehran, although Joseph is more famous for his cold cut sandwiches. Don’t be surprised if the person ahead of you in line orders 30 sandwiches. Those are Joseph’s customers.

9. Khoshbin

This is a small restaurant, although you wouldn’t know it from how many people are inside. Khoshbin, located on Saadi Street near Manoochehri Street, is often referred to as Hassan Rashti. In most of my travels I have never met Hassan and I don’t know if he exists, but the truth about Rashti is beyond doubt. Try the salted eggs and peanuts for starters and order anything else on the menu. That’s fine.

10. Khosravi

Some of the foods on this list are unhealthy and not for everyone. Khosravi uses the Iranian version of the Russian fried Pirozhki and offers them a variety of items such as sweet potato, potato and meat. It is located on Jomhuri Street near Hafez junction. If you go there take a cab because apart from beating the traffic you will have to leave the healthy food.

11. Moby Dick

Most of us have heard about the delicious meals our parents ate in Moby Dick’s which today serves many people in a self service manner. The system is like a school cafeteria. You grab the tray and walk along the long buffet and place your order from the servers behind the counter. The selection includes a wide range of freshly cooked Iranian and international dishes at reasonable prices. Many people go there for the famous Moby Dick Chelo-Kebab. The restaurant is located on Gharani Street.

12. Muslim

As one of the many restaurants in the Grand Bazaar, Moslem is located at the entrance to the Bazaar. Soon your foot is in the door and you are herded to the top of the line, grab a tray, drink your drink, get your sides and order your food which is delivered within minutes.

13 Nayeb (Vozara)

Among food lovers in Tehran it is a sin not to visit the old Nayeb on Vozara Street and once you taste the fillet kebab (Barg) you will understand why this branch of Nayeb has such a strong following.

14. Reza Loghme

It’s amazing how many people know about Reza Loghme, have never tried it. This small sandwich shop only offers one main item called Loghme which is a grilled meat wrapped in a thin Lavash bread. It is one of the cheapest restaurants in town and this is also reflected in the quality of the meat. But the taste of juicy meat draws so many people to 30 Tir street that it is really difficult to order.

15. Reyhoon

Named after the herb that accompanies all of its dishes, Reyhoon offers a variety of kebabs that are only served with freshly baked bread. Although the prices are not cheap, almost everything on the menu is cooked well. Start with the minced kebab and then work your way down the menu.

16. Sahand

Some people don’t know Sahand even though it has a strong reputation for serving one of the best Chelo-Kebabs in town. Their menu is reminiscent of restaurants in Tabriz and includes interesting chicken or lamb options. Specially they also bake their own limited edition Sangak bread. Sahand is located north of Mofateh Street before Motahari junction.

17. Seyed Mahdi

This midnight hangout is famous for three things, traditional ice cream, hot soup and making people go to Vali Asr Street. Seyed Mehdi is actually two shops next to each other, one serving ice cream and Faloudeh (sweets), the other shop has hot soup (Aash) and wheat porridge (Haleem). They close at midnight and are only open for four hours. You can find Seyed Mehdi by heading south from Tajrish Square along Vali Asr Street.

18. Shandiz

This restaurant is all about sheep shearing. Of course they serve all kinds of kebabs, but almost everyone goes there for their famous lamb chops, grilled and fried in the Shandiz/Mashad style. There are few places that serve this type of meat in Tehran. I’ve seen someone eat 3.5 skewers (that’s 18 lamb chops) at a time.

19. Yeganeh

Stepping into Yeganeh is like stepping back in time because they serve the same sandwiches that were popular in our childhood. Whether you want a Brain sandwich or Bandari hot sausage, you can be sure it will be rich, fatty and exceptionally tasty.
