The History of Wylie Texas
Wylie, Texas is located in southeastern Collin County sixteen miles south of McKinney, Texas (The County Seat). It is located on State Highway 78 (N. & S.), and intersects with Farm Road 544 (E. & W.), a quarter mile south of Ballard Avenue or, as it is, Main Street.
Wylie was founded in the early 1870s as Nickleville, Texas and is said to be the name of the first store established.
In 1886 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad ran one mile north of the original town site. Within a year Nickleville’s businesses had moved to take advantage of the jobs provided by the railroad, and in doing so they had transformed their new location in Wylie. The name Wylie was from WDWylie, a Civil War veteran, and Right-of-Way railroad agent. The city is now one kilometer north of the original capital.
In the same year it was given a post office, and incorporated, with a kind of alderman of the state.
In 1888 the St. A rich agricultural district, and two railroads contributed to the growth of the town. In 1890 the population of Wylie was 400, and by 1900 it had grown to 773.
Before 1920 the city had over thirty-five businesses, including two Banks (Current Banks are Capital One, Chase, Inwood National, and The American National Bank of Texas). It also included a school, and a weekly newspaper (Wylie now has several schools including elementary, middle and high schools), and (It has a newspaper called the Wylie News. I don’t know if this is the same paper or not).
In 1920 Wylie received electricity and street lights, and in 1923 the main road (Ballard avenue), was changed from dirt to a gravel road.
Unlike many rural Texas towns, Wylie thrived during the depression years until the 1940s, and this was due to the expansion of the dairy industry to meet the demands of the growing Dallas area. And, by 1940 it had reached a population of 914. Wylie, in turn, enjoyed the nickname “Onion Capital of the Nation” in the 30’s and 40’s. “Wide Awake Wylie” became the city’s nickname in the late 40’s and 50’s. at nightly civic gatherings where businesses stay open until midnight on some nights.
After World War II the population continued to increase. The construction of Lake Lavon five miles north of town and the selection of Wylie to house the offices of the North Texas Municipal Water District, designed to supply water to four area towns, pushed the population to 1,804 in 1960. Over the next two decades the number The population doubled due to the growth of the city of Dallas.
In the late 70’s, Wylie began receiving additional funding for the D/FW expansion. Especially in the 1980s and 1990s, Wylie’s population grew exponentially. In 1980 there were 3,152 people and ninety businesses in Wylie. In 1990 the population was 8,716, and Wylie had spread to Rockwall and Dallas.
The 1990s saw two major disasters. On Mother’s Day in 1993, a tornado hit Wylie. In December 1998, two fires (one on the 9th and one on the 11th) damaged and/or destroyed a dozen businesses. The city and its citizens used this to revitalize the downtown area. By the year 2000, the population was 15,132.
In the 21st century, Wylie has become one of the fastest growing communities in Collin County, the DFW metropolis and the State of Texas. In fact, it was listed as the 8th fastest growing city in the country. With this growth, the City has moved from a “bedroom” category to a “proper” category including quality residential and commercial properties.
