Dining In Bangkok – Le Bouchon
In a conversation with my friend Wolfgang sometime in November, I informed that next Friday was my birthday. “Oh, I’ll take you to Le Bouchon,” (The Cork), he offered. “It’s the best French food in Bangkok. I know the owner very well. The coffee is very good, too”. “Okay,” I happily agreed. “It’s not the kind of place I’d want to be on my own, so it’s going to be encouraging.”
The place was absolutely beautiful; Friendly, quiet (Saturday evening), and clean. The dining area was not big, there were only seven tables, and it didn’t feel crowded. The owner happily sat at the bar while some beautiful Thai women, some of them waiting staff, and one with a child, were waiting in front talking quietly. The options, written on the board were not very good but beautiful. We studied it for ten minutes before ordering.
After that, I did a little research ‘afterwards’ and found that reviewers refer to Le Bouchon as ‘Bangkok’s most famous bistro,’ and a high-end place where many local Gauls eat’.
The notes on the board, I am told, do not change; It features several French dishes. Start with a warm goat’s cheese salad with tiny bits of aromatic melted butter on French toast topped with lots of lettuce tossed in vinegar and oil. Foie gras ravioli with port wine is soft and melt-in-the-mouth, and a delight to stimulate the palate. The main courses at Le Bouchon are surprisingly generous. A real delicacy, the frog’s legs are roasted in garlic and served with potatoes and sauteed vegetables, while the lamb shank is a large piece of spicy meat cooked to perfection, with a white bean sauce and surrounded by fried potatoes and vegetables. There are a variety of traditional desserts that include creme brulee covered in rich caramel on top of a vanilla-flavored custard. Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate is very rich and is served in a bowl made of an edible waffle.
Where is Le Bouchon?
It has become common sense to love Le Bouchon, which according to one respected critic, is now a Bangkok institution. This restaurant has been serving mainly Lyonnaise food to foodies for more than a decade.
