African American Art-The Depiction of a Unique Perspective!
African American art is a broad term that can be used to describe the visual arts of African Americans. It is based on many different traditions, including African, European and American. Traditional Native American crafts include basket weaving, pottery and wood carving and painting. Many slaves arrived from Africa as skilled craftsmen. The first African American artists were slaves who worked as potters, blacksmiths, cabinet makers, quilters, basket makers and silversmiths.
By the time of the Civil War, it had become acceptable for works by African Americans to be displayed in museums, so artists would only create works for this purpose. Such works often follow European romantic traditions and classical traditions of landscape and imagery. At this time, the most famous were: Edward Mitchell Bannister, Henry Ossawa Tanner and Edmonia Lewis. Yet in the Americas, African American art had a racist edge. However, overseas the African American paintings were very well received. In Europe, especially in Paris, these artists were able to show more freedom in experimenting with techniques that went beyond Western art. Freedom of speech was widespread in Paris and to a lesser extent in Munich and Rome.
Perhaps The Harlem Renaissance was one of the most famous movements in African American art. The ideas of liberty and freedom that were already common in many parts of the world had begun to enter the artistic circles of the United States in the 1920s. Famous artists of this time were the photographer James Van Der Zee, the artist Palmer Hayden , Aaron Douglas, Richmond Barthé, Archibald Motley, William H. Johnson, Sargent Johnson, Malvin Gray Johnson, and Hale Woodruff.
The Advent of African American Art and Postmodernism By the late 1980s, the previous definitions of African American art were replaced by contemporary ideas about culture, art-as-it-works, important questions about art and society through in his work, and questions of identity, geography, and history.
