A Taste of Bologna

Warning! This story has nothing to do with horrible sandwich meat.

After struggling with long traffic jams, fake GPS, small streets crowded with people and shopping malls filled with groups on a Saturday evening – There is something refreshing to hear “buonasera signora”!

This is how the journey to Bologna began. Arriving on Saturday, at the peak of late shopping and the beginning of the “apero” (dining) period, was exciting. However, after settling into the very central Hotel Metropolitan, which has a map of the city and some recommendations for restaurants, we hit the busy streets. Bologna is located in northern Italy, and is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. Bologna was called Felsina in the time of the Etuscans and later it was called Bononia under the Romans. Bologna is home to the oldest university in the world, which began in 1088. Today Bologna continues to have a strong student body.

We walked a short distance along Via del l’Independenza to the famous Piazza Maggiore. The street is wide and lined with cheap shops and a mix of snacks and fast food chains – no wonder. Piazza Maggiore is a beautiful old square, surrounded by several palazzos and the Basilica di San Petronio. These buildings were built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. Piazza Maggiore and Fontana del Nettuno are beautiful during the day and at night, but the area is also very crowded (even in March). Further to Piazza Galvani, the shopping is more extensive and the crowds are less.

The next morning after a safe hotel breakfast and a good cappuccino, it was time to explore. Bologna has a well-preserved historical center, although it was heavily bombed during World War II. There are ancient towers, churches, squares and 37km of corridors. This city of pictures, be sure to take your camera to capture the changes of light and shadows on your way. The historic center can easily be visited on foot as many of the best sights are located together. There are countless museums that appeal to all tastes and spirits; such as Museum of Human Anatomy, Museum of Physics, Museum of Military Architecture etc.

  • Tamburini – Bologna’s top restaurant, restaurant and cafe – to experience the taste of traditional Bolognese products
  • Cafe Zanarini – interesting restaurants and great coffee
  • View from San Lucas – located on top of a hill, the church is connected to the old town by 666 balconies (we encourage you to climb the hill)

Bologna is known as a city with a great culinary history. These are not light meals; there is a lot of interest in meat, cheese and pasta. There is a local trend for cured pork; such as prosciutto, salami and mortadella. Pasta comes in all kinds, and a type of bolognese as the most famous. The area is also known for Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar of Modena and excellent wine.

So a morning trip to the Mercato delle Erbe is perfect for food lovers. This indoor market is easy to miss, the signage is not clear, and the building is falling behind because of the hustle and bustle. Via Ugo Bus, business tips and fast food. When you find an entry point you know immediately that you are in another country; the smell is fresh, different colors are inviting and there is a feeling that you are really close to the source of your food.
