The Progression Toward A Cleaner Environment (An Optimist’s Perspective)

State-mandated programs – The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) administers the Smog Check program for the State of California. The goal of the Smog Check program is to reduce the amount of air pollution produced by vehicles. There are more than 7,000 smoke monitoring stations in the state; both are personal. A typical place has one or two places, and one or two employees.

Technology – Recent developments have helped us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint:

a. Advances in battery technology: In the past electric or hybrid vehicles were not practical due to the limited storage capacity of batteries. With recent advances in batteries, electric cars have become a viable option. Although it requires a higher price, it is proven to reduce the cost of car ownership in the long run. Electric cars can now be charged for longer (and more efficient) mileage, and at a lower cost per kilometer than gas-powered cars.

b. Solar panels: Thanks to advances in manufacturing, the total cost of ownership of a solar panel (and the energy generated from it) is much lower than “buying” electricity from fossil fuel plants.

The examples above show some of the ways that technological progress is making clean energy sources not only a viable option, but a cost-effective option.

Macroeconomics – I can’t imagine creating an environmental phenomenon in 20th century America. Thus, the US was an industrialized economy i.e. a variety of highly destructive industries supported the growing economy, and at a basic level provided “food on the table” for most families.

Public awareness – The above can only take us so far if there is public awareness to increase and speed up the process. Below we examine what we want and the desire of all people to change in order to achieve the goal of cleanliness:

a. Organic food (what we had hundreds of years ago) is preferred over conventional food. The implementation of organic food reduces the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers; things that destroy the environment.

b. Cycling to work is considered “cool”; not so long ago a heavy gas car was. Is it because of lack of affordability? Or is it due to a major cultural change? Knowing quite a few corporate CEOs who bike to work, I tend to think it’s the latter.

Now to be clear, I do not mean that we are “out of the wild” and the environment will be better and cleaner going forward. As shown in the picture above of Beijing, 2/3rds of the world’s population do not share this definition. Even in advanced economies, there are factors and groups (remember the BP oil spill; it’s the oil company that promotes drilling in Alaska!) that work against continuity. As long as we have hope for the future, and are willing to take action, I say, we CAN make the world cleaner!
