From Bananas to Bloodwork – Paul Nison Discusses Raw Food Factors and Living

In this article, Paul Nison shares raw food products that range from bananas to blood work. Paul Nison is a raw food chef and educator. He is the author of seven books including “The Raw Life.”

Kevin: One of the questions asked was, “Is it bad to eat six or seven bananas a day?” Most of the questions were about high quality fruit. You said that too much fruit can’t be good, but if you are eating some fruit, what are the good ones to eat?

Paul: Well, it depends on each person’s condition, each person’s occupation etc. and what they are eating throughout the day. If one does not eat a healthy diet and many foods contain sugar, fruit can be at the top. But if one is eating a healthy diet like the lifestyle of Hippocrates, with lots of vegetables in their diet, eating fruit is fine. Obviously, a desk worker will need less than someone who is a runner. There is no one answer for everyone, that is the biggest problem out there. Many people say that there is one answer for everyone.

I have to warn people that there are a lot of people today on the 80/10/10 diet. The problem with the 80/10/10 diet… I actually think it’s good, but the problem is the number of people working in it. They are using more than we need. If someone is eating small amounts of fruit and less fat, that’s fine. But people, I believe, eat too much. They are eating more than they need. They don’t understand that when the body starts to cleanse it can endure even a little. I’m not a calorie counter but if we do it right we don’t have to eat 8, 9, 10 bananas a day, regardless of who we are and regardless of our lifestyle.

One can really enjoy fruits. I’m not against fruit. I hate overeating. That is the problem that people are facing today. He always overeats. No one likes the taste of fruit more than me but I know that eating too much fruit is not good. Fred Bisci told me about all the natural hygienists of the past, that he knew, when I first met him. He told me how much fruit he was eating and how bad it was. I said, “I want to ask them,” because I was asking people for my book. He said, “You can’t ask them because they are all dead now.” I said, “Did they live long?” He said, No.

Then I met William Esther, who is a self-disciplined and versatile person. I met him and asked him, “Do you fast?” He said, No. I asked him why and he said, “I don’t need to.” I said, “What do you eat?” He told me what he ate and it wasn’t much. It was a great interview. He was a clean man who ate fruit, he believed in fruit, but he did not continue in it. That’s a big problem and one that I address in my new book “The Daylight Diet.” People can’t stop and go all night to eat.

Kevin: Well, I got you. What about the complete difference – high oil?

Paul: The same answer – all individual things. An Eskimo who lives in an igloo will need a different diet than someone who lives in the tropics where I am. Overcrowding is rampant no matter where you are in the world. It depends on our situation. I think exercising and exercising to make you overeat, I believe this is another type of eating disorder. We don’t need that much fat and that’s another problem in the raw food system. Most raw foods are made from nuts and seeds and all these other oils now. Crude, plant-based oils digest better than any type of cooking oil, but people tend to overdo it. We have to find what works for us individually. The problem I find is that a lot of people are looking at raw food and saying, “This guy said this,” and “this guy said that.”

There is only one true way to determine whether something is helping us or not, from a physical standpoint. It is to monitor our blood work. I think people overlook this too much in the raw food industry. They talk about what they think is good but they don’t look at their blood work, which tells us what is working and what isn’t. There are many variables out there that come apart from food that can affect our chemistry and everything else. But if our blood work is checked and things are going well, what we are doing is helping us. Now will it work for someone else? It may not. But the best way to continue monitoring is to check our blood work.

Kevin: It’s a great point Paul. I don’t usually get bogged down by asking questions but I encourage everyone to listen to what Paul just said at the last minute. It is very important. Now you’re recommending that someone get their blood tested? What do you think is the best way?

Paul: Doctors believe it or not, they have a good way of measuring blood but the problem is they don’t know how to read blood. Anyone can be high in something and you may be fine but the doctor will say you are low because the average person is very high. So you should go to someone who knows how to read and understand this test.

I am very blessed to have Dr. Shandel, here in Hollywood, Florida. He has long-term blood tests and cancer blood tests. He has his own laboratory on his premises. They have a comprehensive exam that I think is important for everyone to check out. But for anyone to start with, you take a basic blood test and they can tell you the basics. So if there is anything suspicious in there then you can start getting expensive tests. My best advice to anyone if you have drug insurance – I don’t call it health insurance, I call it drug insurance because it pays for drugs and not for health – go to the doctor and say, “I want to get tested for everything possible that my insurance will cover.” If something is wrong in your body some warning signs will show up in that test.

The other way is if you get a sign that something might be wrong, like if you have a few healthy foods you might have chapped lips or a rash or something, remember to remember. If you know that this is related to a deficiency of something, test the truth and see if your levels are normal.

You should also understand, all vitamins and minerals and nutrients work synergistically. So because one thing is perfect, we have to look at both sides of the spectrum here. For example, with vitamin B12 some people may be fine but homocystine may be too high and we have to deal with it. If we have vitamin B12 deficiency, homocystine can rise. A good person who knows how to read this, Brian Clement, Gabriel Cousins, Dr. T at Equalpolitan in Minnesota and Dr. Shandel, these are the people who know how to read this. Anyone can get their blood work done and send it to these people and talk to them over the phone. So I recommend that you check your blood work once or twice a year and then you make the right steps.

Kevin: What do you think about vitamin D?

Paul: I see a big problem, from a nutritional or medical point of view today – and Hippocrates confirms this. I used to work with the Hippocrates Health Institute. I am very fortunate to be good friends with Brian Clement and teach at the Institute now. They have more tests and studies and results and knowledge than anyone else in the world. They have been doing this for more than 50 years. They have found, and other raw food doctors have confirmed, that vitamin B12 and vitamin D, there is a big problem in the raw food movement, or even any movement today, when it comes to nutrition. People are suffering from weaknesses. So we have to deal with this.

I recommend that you add both of these features and review them carefully. I also have to say that I was blessed, my friend Rick Dina and Karen Dina, were staying with me because they were in town with me at the Raw Summit. They are two doctors I would heartily recommend. Not only do they know as much as other people I have described, about medical tests and how to read them, but they are probably easier to relate to. They have a lot of information out there and they are coming out with a book next year. He teaches at the Living Light Culinary School at Fort Bragg. Rick Dina and Karen Dina are excellent sources for blood tests. I have had good discussions with them. I can’t give someone a high opinion unless I know it’s true. The people I am mentioning are the people I recommend people to connect with.

I don’t listen to people who are charismatic but don’t really know anything about it. There are a lot of people out there who promote junk food, who claim to be the world’s leading and wisest leaders in raw food but they wouldn’t know how to read blood if someone showed them the information in front of them. They don’t know what they are doing and they get a lot of people into trouble. So we must show awareness of who we go to and what we do.
