Creating Cuisine in Sayulita on the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico
What about Sayulita on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit that draws us in again? It is located in the northern part of Puerto Vallarta, and it is a country that has been removed from the “tourist area”.
Is it because it’s a small fishing village with a sleepy, surfer vibe that helps our inner child just be free to explore the sea, the beach, and the Mexican culture of yesteryear?
Is it a village that resists the temptation of over-commercialization that would destroy the warmth and beauty of a hidden gem?
Is it a sandy beach with long breaks in the waves and warm water?
We believe that it is all of the above and “Sayulita Good Vibes” is a feeling that all guests experience… and we are always impressed.
Set up Base Camp
This article is about eating…plain and simple…as most of what you eat here is fresh, locally sourced, and affordable.
Sayulita is an epicurean delight with unique cuisine from “street food” to gourmet restaurants.
We often choose the road less traveled and find vacation rentals that boast fully equipped kitchens.
Again Sayulita Life (sayulitalife.com) is the destination. They represent over 400 vacation rental options and we often find the “perfect” place.
We love to cook and on this trip we attracted two other like-minded families to join us. Looking for a place for three couples to share results in the cost of the most expensive properties at reasonable prices as well.
Cornucopia of New Products
Sayulita and other surrounding villages have planned and organized many farmers’ markets that emphasize organic, offering fruits and vegetables.
Another market we loved was a short drive south of Sayulita at the La Cruz Marina Fish Market in Banderas Bay where you can buy freshly caught fish, crabs, lobsters, oysters and all kinds of fish at great prices.
Fish markets have been a staple of Banderas Bay for generations, with many restaurants, chefs and caterers flocking to the area daily to feast on seafood.
In addition, the Sunday market features handmade products by local people and from indigenous cultures in the area…each vendor can sell their own creations…now that’s local pride.
Dining IN… The Personal Chef Option
For a special treat we hired 3 chefs for the evening to share their skills and prepare local dishes from their ingredients.
Justifying the decision to hire a cook for three couples who love to cook for themselves was not difficult considering the alternatives.
Imagine if you can eat freely on your vacation, and the only thing you have to do is enjoy a cooking demonstration (if you want), enjoy a refreshing drink and wait for the delicious food prepared for you and your friends. preferences.
No buying ingredients, no prepping, no plating, and best of all… no cleaning. Everything happens like magic… and for less than the cost of a meal at a restaurant.
You have to try it once on a special day or event and besides you are all on vacation…so make a memory!
The following are three unique chefs with their own style and skills… all waiting for your call.
Chef Laura
We were introduced to Laura as our housekeeper at “Villa Sol Blau” and we were told that she is an excellent cook and cooks for many guests.
What we discovered is that Laura uses family recipes matched with fresh local ingredients and treats her diners as “family” while showing the joy and grace of her heritage… we loved the traditional food and Laura’s beautiful personality… ” she was in the kitchen!
Laura prepared a popular local meal that included Green Chile Enchiladas with slow cooked black beans followed by Chile Relleno with poblano sauce and Mexican rice all from the family. Her Flan was homemade and was soft and sweet.
Chef Sofia Silva Sanchez
We “found” Chef Sofia on the Sayulita Life website and she also has her own website (sayulitachef.com). After reading glowing reviews and her many options, we made a date for dinner.
Sofia is charming, enthusiastic, and very personable and as a chef her diverse culinary talents range from traditional Mexican cuisine to Italian, Indian, Moroccan, Vegetarian and Vegan menus.
His best dessert record has been downloaded!
The meal started with Cucumber Cups filled with Shrimp Ceviche, followed by
green leafy salad made with chipotle. The main entree was grilled chicken in poblano sauce with Mexican rice and dessert was our homemade Key Lime Pie with strawberries and mint.
Chef Daniel Murillo
Chef Daniel is a professional and cooks fast…he lights up the room! Can you say… Flambe!
Daniel owns the restaurant “Mexotix” in the neighboring town of San Pancho which is a short distance north of Sayulita. He offers his culinary and culinary services in Sayulita and we have enjoyed his “Mexican-Fusion with an Asian Twist” style several times. (sayulife.com/mexotik)
Chef Daniel works with his Sous Chef Juan to create amazing food. They started with Seared Tuna with a sesame crust served on tostini with cucumber noodles & bean sprouts dressed with a balsamic reduction.
Followed by handmade Empanadas filled with shrimp cooked in citrus Mexican salsa & melted panela cheese.
With a little flash and fire Daniel cooked Octopus in orange hibiscus & chipotle reduction served with fried vegetables & coconut rice… tender and delicious.
Dining IN… Prepare Your Own Meals
The three families set up a friendly competition and within three nights it was done! But our first stop was a trip to the La Cruz Fish Market followed by a visit to the various markets in town and another stop at the best fish market on the bridge into town.
We started with the Team Challenge: Jumbo Blue Shrimp cooked three ways.
One group prepared Seared Mahi-Mahi with vegetables and avocado.
Group One grilled two very large Lobsters with melted butter on the side.
One group grilled two Sushi Grade Yellow Tail Tuna steaks about two pounds each.
We all showed off our cooking skills, tried special wines from Chile and Mexico, and most of all we enjoyed it.
Summary
Cooking in a village with only chefs, fresh seafood, organic farmers’ markets and local vendors offer everything you need to create unforgettable culinary experiences … all in a tropical environment … very special.
“Sayulita Good Vibes” is a state of mind that all guests experience… and we are always impressed!
Viva Mexico… Viva Sayulita!
After all, what’s the rush… to be inspired…
