Getting Introduced to Thai Food

Are you having an American dinner tonight? Tired of chicken, potatoes, salad and pasta? Thinking about Thai food but nah it seems difficult to cook? Well, Thai food should be easy and quick to prepare. In Thailand, street food vendors or food vendors are everywhere in a city or small town. There are all kinds of street food, desserts, vegetable soup, curry, condiments, fruits, and more. I can say that this is our life in Thailand. It is more common to find a good food retailer, than a restaurant. Most street vendors in Thailand have never attended culinary school. How do they make such delicious food? It is often useful in the kitchen.

As I said, Thai food is prepared easily and quickly. Thai food is all about combining the right ingredients. In America, finding a restaurant that serves authentic Thai food can be difficult especially if you don’t live in a big city. I’ve been to many Thai restaurants in Oregon, and most of them serve Thai food that is American. Some of the dishes are far from the original Thai cuisine except for the name of the dish.

If you have never been to a Thai restaurant or eaten a lot of Thai food, going to a Thai restaurant is an opportunity to get to know Thai food better. Go with friends so you can try different foods. Also, using the internet, you can find authentic Thai recipes. You may ask what are the things that define Thai cooking.

The ingredients make the difference. If a recipe calls for a lot of American vegetables, it may not be authentic Thai. If you find a cookware with a lot of unknown names or something that is not common to find in the local grocery store, it may be. For example, in Thailand, a green curry dish consists of four main vegetables: Thai eggplant, pea eggplant, kaffir lime leaves and Thai basil. American green curry may contain green beans, carrots, eggplant, or tomatoes.

If this is your first time cooking Thai food, plan ahead. Find your favorite dishes online or in a Thai cookbook. Learn about the ingredients and go to your local grocery store or online in Asia. Templeofthai.com and importfood.com are popular sites that use authentic Thai ingredients and products. They carry almost everything from flour, sauces, curry paste, noodles, condiments, fresh produce and vegetables.

Don’t give up. In fact, making Thai food is not that difficult. It’s easy when you know your ingredients.

Another part is having the right cooking equipment. Many people say that having a wok is essential, but I would say that it depends. It’s a good thing to have. If you have an electric stove, using a wok won’t help much with other dishes. But if you have a gas stove, adding a grill to your kitchen can make your food taste better because of the way a gas stove distributes heat. I have a wok at home and an electric stove. So I don’t use my wok much because it’s an electric stove, it doesn’t distribute the heat evenly on the sides of the wok. A mortar and pestle are essential if you want to make your own paste. Many people find ways to make food instead. It’s a substitute, but in my opinion, it doesn’t give the same texture as pasta.

When you’re ready to cook, following your recipe’s directions is a good start. However, when it comes to taste, go with what you like, because taste varies from person to person. You have to get your money’s worth to spice up your plate. If the recipe tells you to add two tablespoons of fish sauce, add one tablespoon first. Taste it and see how you like it. If you want more, add it. As my mother always told me, “it’s easy to improve the flavor if you add a little at first. If you add too much at first, you won’t be able to improve.”

Thai cuisine is diverse and offers a variety of flavors and textures. It’s fun, and there are many ways to make Thai food a fun culture. Perfect for Thai food!
