A History of Woodworking
Early Evidence
We know from archaeological finds that, long before recorded history, wood was used for shelter, weapons, tools, cooking utensils, and decorative items such as jewelry. A great advance in the art of art and construction can be expected from the discovery of iron as a stronger material than wood. By the time of the Bible, we know that technology and working methods were very advanced, which was a solid foundation for other things in the future.
Medieval Woodworking
The Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Woodworking was one of the many arts that flourished and became highly skilled during the Renaissance. It was during the early middle ages, from the 100s to the 1400s, that carpenters began to specialize, and the various branches of the trade began: sawyers, carvers, joiners, carpenters, and woodcarvers. Also, during this period, various Craft Associations were created to promote the education of new workers and to protect their trade methods which were often very protected.
How Weapons Are Made
Role of Weapons. As woodworking progressed, a parallel, supporting technology was developed—tool making. At first the woodworking tools were wood and metal scraps; even today, some of the most sought-after instruments are built this way. The end of the middle ages gave way to the industrial revolution which eventually made it possible to change the system, manual and mechanical. This change was opposed in the late 1900s and early 2000s by the powerful Arts-and-Crafts movement in England, the United States, and Russia. Supporters of this group felt that woodworking machines demeaned the worker and wanted to emphasize the skills, dignity, and personality of the craftsman. Now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, two different trends seem to be emerging. Many woodworkers are upgrading or replacing their machines with Computer-Numerical-Control (CNC) equipment. Among many hobbyists, there is a new interest in traditional methods of work: hand-knitting, decorative embroidery, decoration, and lathe-turned work.
What does the future hold?
The future. Wood, properly managed, is “an additional aid.” Fortunately, in recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of preserving the world’s equatorial rainforests, where hardwoods and exotic woods are found. Woodworkers are considered one of the most dedicated of these protectors. The entire wood industry, using reclaimed wood from old buildings, barns, and bridge timbers, is thriving. There are only a few things that give wood its beauty, strength, and quality in construction. As any dedicated woodworker can tell you, the joy and satisfaction that comes from this difficult and rewarding work is incomparable.
