Old Brewers’ Row

Today, most of the beer in the American market is produced in the Midwest, but that wasn’t always the case. For much of America’s colonial and colonial history, New York City was the brewing capital of the world.

The early Dutch settlers, who founded New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, were the first to brew beer there. He quickly realized that the New York area had the perfect climate for growing beer’s essential ingredients, especially barley and hops. Beer was made for the locals, continuing after the English conquered New Amsterdam and called it New York, and after the American revolution.

In the 1900s, a boom began in New York City, fueled by the booming population and technological advances of the Industrial Revolution. Brooklyn became a brewery for two main reasons. Until the mid-1800s, the area’s water sources were used for brewing beer. Manhattan, because it settled so quickly, had already polluted its water, giving Brooklyn a reputation for having cleaner water than Manhattan. This changed in 1842 with the construction of the Croton Aqueduct, but by that time Brooklyn was largely legal.

Another factor is the large concentration of German immigrants in Brooklyn. Germans became prominent in New York’s brewing industry as soon as they moved there, bringing their traditions and skills from the old world. They brought beer to America, which quickly became the most popular type of beer in the country, and they had a lot of influence in the brewing industry. They settled in many areas, especially Bushwick, Brooklyn, from the early 1800s. This made Bushwick the home of Brewers’ Row.

At its peak, Brewers’ Row had 14 breweries within 14 blocks, bordered by Schole Street, Meserole Street, Bushwick Place, and Lorimer Street. Some of the most popular were:

The Rheingold Brewery, which produced Rheingold beer, which is very popular in New York.

Huber Brewery, which was brewed for nearly 100 years under owners Otto Huber and later Edward Hittleman. This brewery still stands as a large and well-preserved example of 18th century architecture.

The Fallert Brewery, which closed under Prohibition. Also still standing, it is a very beautiful example of the German round-arch style of beer brewing.

The Ulmer Brewery, New York City chose history. Also an excellent example of the circular style, this building is unique because it has original iron gates that lead into its central courtyard.

The Old Brewers’ Row brewery is a great day trip for any true smoker or history buff. It can easily be closed during the day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a few pints in Williamsburg’s many nearby neighborhoods. They are also featured on the New York Beer and Brewery Tour.
