College Dorms Part II – Life After the Dorms

Most incoming college freshmen live in dorms their first year. In my opinion this is a smart decision and a great opportunity to find new products. However, not all first-timers live in boarding houses. Some move directly into bedrooms, condos, or houses. In College Roommates Part II, I will discuss my experiences living with roommates. It’s not all good, but living in a house is 100 times better than living in a dorm.

I moved into my first apartment in August of my sophomore year. I decided to find a place with a friend (we’ll call him Mike) I’ve known for years. We asked several of our high school friends to stay with us, but no one was there. We searched hard for two other roommates. We wanted to stay in a four-bedroom because of the social aspect, but mostly because it’s cheaper than staying in a two-bedroom. Then we found two boys to stay with. He was sharing a room with Mike, so they were friends but they didn’t know him at all. I wasn’t worried at all. If I had Kraut in the yard, nothing could be worse, after all, in the house I would have my own room and bathroom.

The rooms are much better than the dorms. You get back your privacy (lots of it), you get more space, and you get more independence. I had my own desk and my own computer. I had my mini fridge in my room and my clothes. What we had to share was the living room. We chose to stay in a house known for parties and fun times. We had a pre-furnished apartment with rental TVs. We also had our own washer and dryer.

Living in my first apartment was one of the best years of my life. My new roommates turned out to be amazing people. We are still friends to this day. Having four boys in one house comes with its pros and cons. Some of the best things are always having people to play games with (I can’t count the times we play 2v2 basketball), having someone to play video games with, having friends to go out with, and just hanging out and having fun with friends. But when you have three other guys, things can get messy. Garbage piles up every day, nobody cleans the kitchen, and someone wants to throw a party the night you have an exam to study for.

Overall, my first (and only) experience in the house was a good one. I made two trusted friends there, although I never met many other people in the house. We had great times, especially when we bought a ping pong table for the living room, and great memories. I would encourage everyone to live in an apartment for at least one year of their college career unless you have a condo or luxury home.

During my senior year of college, my friend Mike and I decided to move into a condo with two of our friends from home. The people we were staying with in the house were happy about it, and they all went to stay with two other friends from their home. We decided to move into a condo because A. it was cheaper and B. we needed a new place. When we moved in with a friend whose parents owned the balcony, we didn’t have to pay any fees or hidden fees. Our rental was straight forward and had all the amenities. We had everything from the house and more.

The downfall of the house was that it was old. Things began to freeze and things were destroyed. Not everything was normal. During the time I lived on the balcony, I survived 4 hurricanes, and one of them was a direct hit. Florida was beaten in August of my senior year. The storms demolished the building, and the condo association did nothing to repair it. Trees were everywhere, roofs and siding were gone, mold and leaks grew in our rooms. Fortunately we were able to control it.

We also had a dog on the porch. One of my roommates brought her home because she was abandoned. He was a sweet dog in the end, but pain when the dog. He chewed everything and peed whatever he didn’t chew.

If I had to choose to live in an apartment or live in an apartment, I would choose the condo probably 8/10 times. Both have their pros and cons. I met my best friends who live in and around the house. I actually met my boyfriend through a roommate and Mike met his boyfriend because he lives in a condo near us. You can’t go wrong either way. Anything is better than living in a dorm. I’ve never been in the house so I can’t really comment on that. In the next section I will discuss the pros and cons of houses and condos.
