Different Kinds of Colleges and Universities to Consider in Your College Search

When you begin your college search, students need to understand that there are no schools that have a one-size-fits-all approach. There are many different types of colleges and universities and it is important to know which one is right for you.

Emily wants to know her professors and is looking forward to academics with a history. Alex doesn’t know what he likes but he has good grades and would like to try college. Jen sees herself in a great school and wants to study at an out-of-state university.

Each of these students should be aware of the different types of colleges and universities available. They should consider what is important to them and begin their college search based on this information. Let’s take a look at the different types of colleges that might be a good fit for these students and you.

Community Colleges – This is the most affordable way for students to begin their college education. Community colleges are often open admissions meaning that all students are accepted as long as they have a high school diploma or GED. Most community colleges offer a two-year degree. Students can often attend a four-year college or university or pursue a career that does not require additional education. Some community colleges offer dorm life, but most do not. Community colleges often do not offer many activities or services to students.

Public universities – These are institutions that are usually large and are funded by tax dollars. Every country has one or more. These are usually cheaper for the students of the school than most other schools. They offer majors in many different departments, many extracurricular activities, athletics, and many ways to live such as dorms, student houses, and Greek houses. They offer four-year and higher degrees. Public schools differ in how competitive they are. Some are very selective about the college admissions process and others accept most of their applicants.

Liberal Arts Colleges – These are usually small schools that offer a wide range of courses in the liberal arts. Many employers believe that the liberal arts are a good foundation for any career. Students who want a school that offers more attention and opportunities to get to know their professors may prefer a liberal arts college. Professors who teach at technical schools often like to teach and like to interact with their students. Some of these schools are very selective and some are less so.

Elite colleges and universities – These are the most competitive schools in the U.S. Some have fewer than 2,000 students, while others are slightly larger. They are very academically inclined and often attract bright and motivated students. Many of these schools have huge financial resources that enable them to invest heavily in high-quality facilities and excellent professors. Many elite colleges and universities have diverse student populations. This group of schools includes the Ivy League, state ivies, and other highly competitive colleges and universities. They spend a lot of money to get there, but they also offer scholarships and financial aid that will attract more students.

Two different types of colleges that students can also consider are regional specialty schools such as culinary arts and online or distance learning schools.
