Places to Picnic in Charlotte – Freedom Park

In our first article we discussed Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte’s Eastern Park Region. Today we are going to the center of the City and going to Freedom Park. Located three miles from downtown Charlotte, Freedom Park is located between the historic Dilworth Neighborhood and Myers Park. Known as Charlotte’s “Central Park”, Freedom Park spans 98 acres and promises something for everyone.

In the center of Freedom Park is Freedom Park Lake. The seven-acre lake has a loop trail that’s perfect for a romantic stroll with that special someone, a walk with your kids and/or dog or a power bike ride. Geese were a big problem along the way but now they are fine. The main thing is that the route can be very crowded on weekends.

There is much more to be found at Freedom Park. Two playgrounds will keep the kids entertained and the choice of sports includes volleyball, basketball, football, baseball and tennis. There are also two batting cages for your enjoyment. There’s plenty of open space to play Frisbee, the grass shooter another of our favorite outdoor games. Of course, if you’re like me, you can always go back with a good book or a pad and pencil. Like I said, Freedom Park has something for everyone.

Whether your group is large or small, there is a picnic area in the park that is right for you. The Mahlon Adams Pavilion is perfect for family reunions or corporate events. There is a banquet hall that can accommodate up to 70 people, a kitchen, a gas fireplace and a large screen TV. The plaza area outside is perfect for cooking your dinner and sitting outside in this nice weather. There are also several other outdoor pavilions with picnic tables and grills. There is even one with lights. Of course, if you’re playing with your family or a small group, there are plenty of tables available in the park.

Freedom Park also hosts several special events each year. Central is the annual Festival in the Park held in September. Over 150 artists are invited to exhibit and sell their artwork and compete for cash prizes on the Artist’s Walk and Lake Walk. Whether you’re there to shop or not, it doesn’t matter, you’ll enjoy these two tours. You will be amazed at the variety of entertainment that you can enjoy during the six stages of the festival. The Main Stage features a variety of music from classical to rock and almost everything in between.

The Charlotte Fold Stage offers traditional folk music along with bluegrass, Celtic, gospel and more. There is also a Carolina Clown Stage, a Magician’s Stage and a Youth Talent Stage to enjoy. New for 2009 will be a Theater Festival featuring established talent from the Charlotte area as well as up and coming young actors. There are also a variety of food and beverage vendors to satisfy your needs. The 2009 Festival in the Park takes place from September 24 – 27. Check it out and let us know what you think.
