South Pacific Islanders Earn Scholarship at Polynesian Cultural Center

Founded by Mormons more than half a century ago, the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Oahu is the largest paid project in Hawaii. It also includes an authentic Hawaiian show, the world’s largest nighttime show, and reconstruction of villages from seven Polynesian cultures.

Since opening in 1963, more than 33 million visitors have been introduced to the Polynesian people, their arts and traditions, and nearly 15,000 Brigham Young University-Hawaii students have supported their education while serving as friendly guides, performers and other Polynesian culture. The Center’s staff serves people from all over the world.

Hawaii’s Polynesian Cultural Center, located one hour from Waikiki showcases seven Polynesian villages that offer visitors a rare opportunity to participate in the daily activities of Hawaiian and South Pacific culture.

Many South Pacific countries are represented at the Polynesian Cultural Center, where reconstructed villages, exhibitions and hands-on activities show 8 of them: Samoa, Aotearoa (Maori New Zealand), Fiji, Hawaii, Marquesas, Tahiti, Tonga and Rapa Nui. (Easter Island).

o Meet, learn and socialize with people from Hawaii, Samoa, Maori New Zealand (Aotearoa), Fiji, Tahiti, Marquesas and Tonga

o Watch the only boat shows in Hawaii

o Host a traditional Hawaiian banquet, a dinner party fit for an ali’i (royalty).

o Take in the world famous evening show, “Horizons: Where the Sea Meets the Sky”

o Participate in family activities from all over Polynesia.

Establishment of the Nonprofit Polynesian Cultural Center

Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as Mormons) worked among the Polynesian people in Tahiti and the surrounding islands in the South Pacific since 1844. Missionaries arrived at the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1850. By 1865, the LDS Church had purchased 6,000 acres of farmland surrounding the town of Laie on Oahu.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a 42-acre property on Oahu’s North Shore. Founded in 1963, the non-profit Center was created so Pacific Island students at nearby Brigham Young University, Hawaii could get through college by sharing their island heritage with visitors. The university’s students come from an area that covers approximately 12 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean.

Most BYU-Hawaii students work up to 20 hours a week during school and during breaks to complete their degree debt-free. Fees paid by visitors to enter, as well as profits from food and gift sales, support the educational programs, which have educated thousands of Polynesian students since their inception. Visitors are invited to tour the university campus to “see where your money is going,” and tour the Laie Hawaii Temple.

Travel Across Polynesia in One Day

At the center of PCC’s activities are the island villages, which offer visitors a unique opportunity to learn about – and participate in – the traditions of each island.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in hands-on activities, which feature everything from island games and crafts to food preparation and martial arts training. Authentic Hawaiian entertainment, all-you-can-eat buffets, boat races, an IMAX(TM) theater, shopping and the world’s largest evening show are part of the event.

With its large lagoon, waterfalls, lush vegetation, and an “erupting” volcano, the Polynesian Cultural Center captures all the romance and excitement of the South Pacific islands. A visit here represents the chance to travel through Polynesia in one day, and take part in a celebration of centuries of Polynesian culture – no passport required.

Several villages offer more activities than the traditional shows that have been organized throughout the day. These new activities now available include Spear Throwing, Fire Walking, Wood & Tiki Carving, Fire Cooking, Tree Climbing, Bonfire, Fire Knife Dance, Art, Haka Dance, Maori War Canoe, Coconut Pulling.

Hawaii has become world famous as a unique place of magic, entertainment and education. The influence of old Polynesia still lives on among Pacific Islanders who display their arts and crafts and perform their music and dance at the Polynesian Cultural Center from noon to 10pm, 7 days a week.
