How Did Women Make Money In 1887?
Mrs ML Rayne’s 1887 book, What Can a Woman Do? It provides a fascinating look at how Victorian women made money in the 1880s. It is rich in information and vignettes that show what was possible for working women 120 years ago. The opportunities for women of interest were greater than most of us thought.
The book is entitled “Her Position in the Business and Literary World”. A larger share is given to women poets but it is the business opportunities for women that are most interesting. Rayne looks at women’s jobs and the different ways women can make money on their own.
A title is given to women in the legal profession. The author states that there were ninety women practicing law in the United States in the 1880s, most of whom graduated from the University of Michigan, the first US university to admit women to law school. In the first form of networking the author suggests that the reader contact one of the female lawyers he mentions and ask them for advice on pursuing a career in law.
There is also a chapter on medical women. The author writes that Europe was ahead of the United States in opening its medical schools to women. In the US, a women’s medical school opened in Boston in 1848. In the 1880s nearly half of Boston University’s medical school students were women and Rayne mentions other medical schools in the US that admitted women.
Other jobs covered in this book include stenography and typing; wood; nursing; telegraph; it is a government job. This book contains many discussions about wages and income. In the subject of telegraphy, a profession for which there were special educational programs, Rayne writes about the wage gap between male and female workers. Women were paid about $500 a year while men earned an annual salary of $840.
Rayne’s feminist pursuit goes beyond the wage gap. She writes about how a woman’s work is not done. The man goes home to rest and read while the woman returns home from work and is tired. Rayne was clearly a woman ahead of her time. Topics are devoted to women as founders and businesswomen. She writes about women who received patents for their inventions and women who started their own businesses.
Several of the money-making methods described in this book are still popular today. Raising chickens, even in cities and villages, is becoming more and more popular. This book has a topic on raising chickens that will appeal to backyard chicken enthusiasts. There is also the topic of making money with beekeeping, another popular activity these days. Some of the endless hobby money-making opportunities discussed in this book include clothing, housekeeping, cooking (today we call ourselves caterers), and housesitting (today we call them housemates).
