What Is an Outdoor Living Area? One Definition

What is outdoor seating? The simple answer is simple and very broad: it can be whatever the owner wants it to be, providing it is what it is outside and that’s when the good times end life in that. What are your needs? How do you like to spend your time outdoors? These are questions that will help you develop yours definition of outdoor living space. For these reasons, my meaning of outdoor seating includes:

  • patio, dining area and kitchen.
  • facilities including a swimming pool and lounge.
  • landscaped grounds and garden to enhance the view.

First, the main elements of the outdoor living space, like the interior of the house, include the kitchen, dining and living areas. When the weather permits, our family likes to cook, eat, relax and enjoy the outdoors; my wife and I like to be with our friends; our three young children love to be with their friends. Cooking, then, is important and takes place all the time from morning to midnight. A good grill is the centerpiece of any outdoor kitchen but an extra grill or two somehow helps a cook’s life. A well-equipped workspace with a chopping block or chopping block can add to the outdoor chef’s happy hours. Access to water, whether it’s through outdoor plumbing or a hose connection or water dispenser, is another important factor. Another important thing is to keep food and drinks cool and useful, either in the fridge or cold on ice. An added bonus for me is the sit up counter where my friends can watch and keep me entertained while I cook. All of these should be arranged to form a functional triangle as in the home. Next, the kitchen should have access to the dining area. A dining table with seating for larger groups than immediate family members is a smart option if space allows. Again, a bonus here would be outdoor storage to store patio dishes, flatware and linens. A chest or garden shed can easily be modified to accommodate this. Finally, a place to sit, relax, read, socialize and watch TV if possible is a nice addition to any outdoor area. Comfortable chairs, sofas, side tables, glider or swimming balconies and even a day bed can make the space cozy and comfortable. Patio furniture can be purchased in a variety of colors and materials to meet everyone’s needs; my bias leans towards cedar patio furniture. The goal here, in the end, is to make the outdoor living space look great and the interior look good.

In addition to eating, relaxing and entertaining outside, we also like to be active; so my outdoor living space also includes a swimming pool and other activities. Pools come in three basic forms: in-ground, in-ground and above-ground. In-ground pools are the most expensive option but they also offer a lot of functionality and great aesthetics. The pool is well positioned to receive a lot of sun, an aspect that is not important in the tropics perhaps but certainly in the north where the summer season is short and mild. Adequate landscaping around the pool is important for traffic and for cleaning and maintenance. I recommend that two patio areas be included in the design of the pool. One is an open area where lounge chairs or adirondacks can be set up for sun worshippers. The other will be able to escape from the sun in the form of a covered area or shelter or some type of pagoda or tiki house. As a general rule, people stay around the pool as long as they can get out of the sun for a bit without leaving the entire area. A hot tub or sauna can also be a fun addition, if for no other reason than that it adds a year-round draw card to the balcony. In addition, if space permits, I can set aside a long but unnecessary area to play baseball or soccer, shoot hoops or practice football, or throw horseshoes, bocce, lawn bowling, whatever. Many yards may contain all, or some of these elements to some extent; to reduce is better to stop. The more options available, the more fun can be had.

Finally, space and atmosphere are essential to any outdoor living space; these things can be created by a well-designed garden and beautiful decoration. The goal here is to create ideas for any event, be it parties, dinner parties, afternoon barbecues or quiet family time. The biggest compliment is for guests to say they feel like they are visiting a resort. Having a clear theme in mind when designing a landscape and garden is well advised. Some popular themes include tropical paradise, desert desert, northern forest, English garden, Symmetrical Zen inspiration or a mix of different colors that come from several themes. I love a hot topic but with a few things from others to work with. Medium-sized trees and shrubs such as Japanese maples, tiger-eye sumacs, magnolias, dogwoods and smoke bushes provide a lush, multi-colored look for any occasion; long beautiful grass can create a private image and mimic the appearance of a bamboo forest. Odd spices add to the quality of the desert; yuccas, for example, will grow anywhere. Honeysuckle, trumpet vine, climbing roses, bougainvillea (in tropical climates) or simple ivy can be grown on a fence, or in another part of the garden such as a trellis, arbor or pagoda. If space permits, add a garden bench or swing to the path. Next, I also really like natural stone and rock. Rock Rock makes a great border around a pool deck and patio and can be placed to highlight a rock beach or a dry river bed. The appeal of the grotto can be increased by building stonework to create larger garden beds around the pool or patio. Big stones and gemstones are always a plus. Regardless of the style, there are a few things to keep in mind: the amount of space available (don’t overcrowd the space – remember: less is more), the location and movement of the sun, the amount of rain and easy watering if necessary. , and of course, the price.

Finally, my definition of outdoor living space is – my meaning. It reflects my personality and taste. It fits my family’s wants and needs and how we like to spend our time outdoors. You may want to set aside a fire pit or ice rink for the winter. Create your outdoor living space the way you want it. I just hope my thoughts provide a starting point.
