College Roommates Part I – Dorm Life

Whether you’re moving into a dorm as a freshman, or a senior looking for a nice apartment close to campus, you’re bound to have friends. There are very few college students who live alone, mostly because it is so expensive. In college towns, rent for an apartment can be as high as $750 a month. It may seem like a lot, and it may not feel like your parents are paying, but for most students $750 a month is not worth it. The solution to rent is to have people living in the same room. In this article I will explain the pros and cons of roommates, how to find roommates, and some of my experiences along the way. This can be divided into two parts because of its length. Part I will discuss dorm life, while Part II will discuss life after the dorms.

Having just graduated from college in April of 2005, I consider myself an expert on college life. Not much has changed in the months I’ve been alone. I’m living alone for the first time in my life, and let me tell you, it’s a lot different than being in college.

Many students begin their college experience living in the dorms. When I moved, I chose to live in an old house. Twenty odd rooms on the ground floor with one large bathroom. The boys’ section was separated from the girls’ section by a living room/kitchen with one stove, one oven, a few bedrooms, and a TV. Not quite the same as living at home with your own bedroom and bathroom. Most dorms (at least the older ones) don’t have single rooms. Everyone lives with a roommate, and sometimes three in one room. Most schools give you the option to choose a roommate or assign you a random one. My freshman year, I chose to be with a friend. Make sure you are close friends with this person or you may end up killing them. I have many friends who hate their roommates. They were friends on the outside, but the bedroom was hell.

I was lucky for the first semester of college. I got along very well with my roommate. We lived different lives, which was a good thing. I was on a meal plan and he wasn’t. We had different classes at different times and socialized with different people. In my opinion, this is how it should be if you choose to have a partner. You can’t be too close or your friendship might end. (Please note that the dorms I’m talking about are the ones that are about 12×12 with two twin beds and two desks and enough room to stand up. The new dorms where people have their own rooms and bathrooms are completely different.) My roommate ended up going to a new school. after our first semester for various reasons. I thought I made it in the shade. Can’t the school know? Can I have the room for myself? The answer was no.

Enter Kraut (my new German friend). He was American, but he grew up in Germany in the army. This was one of the best and worst experiences of college. Being with a complete stranger who is different from you. This is everyone’s worst nightmare coming up. Andrew (who I call Kraut… please don’t be offended by this. It was just a friendly joke between us) moved in with me because he was voted out of the room three times by his previous roommates. Oh. After spending a semester with him, I know why he voted for him.

At first, he was in ROTC. I have nothing against being a proud American and wanting to fight, but when you have to get up at 4:00 AM every morning to go run with the team, that’s when I start to lose. His alarm went off at 3:45 AM every day and he only slept for 30 minutes. He didn’t go to class, so he was there to ruin all my free time. He played Counter-Strike (which I’m sure you all know what it is. Counter-Strike is a terrorist/terrorist video game). Played all night with noise. You would think my bedroom was a war zone. I tried to take him out with him, or to have lunch with him in the cafeteria, but I failed. I learned a lot from Kraut and I will never forget him. My most memorable moment was when I turned the volume all the way up on my PC and blasted the Salute Your Shorts theme song into his ears as he slept. I recorded everything on video. He carried me to bed. I haven’t seen Kraut since I left the house.

Some Pros and Cons of living in dorms (and I’m talking about old dorms, not dorms).

Pro – There at camp. You can wake up 5 minutes before class and walk there in boxer shorts.

Pro – There at camp. Food is nearby (especially if you’re on a diet).

Pro – Social life. You meet a lot of new people living in the dorms. Some become lifelong friends. Dorms often have small parties and social events where everyone can socialize.

Pro – New. The college wants to experience new things. Dorm life is one of them.

Pro – It’s cheap. Not as cheap as renting a house.

Pro – It’s easy to find games.

Pro – There is an Ethernet computer network. Access to high-speed Internet and everyone is connected. Great for playing video games. (When I was a freshman things like Napster were new. People were downloading music left and right on the high speed internet and sharing music like you’ve never seen before. And as far as we know, it was all legal).

Con – No privacy. People just randomly walk into your room. Be a lock.

Con – Old and dirty dorms are not fun. I was sick once a month while living there. I still have trouble breathing.

Con – Dorms are very small. You can’t fit everything you have in your closet.

Con – Having roommates you can’t do anything with.

Con – Internet firewalls. Some dorms are very strict now about what you can and can’t do on the campus internet. Sorry guys, no music downloads yet.

Con – Cooking food can be a big challenge. You don’t have a fridge or an oven in your room.

Con – Bed bugs and rats. Depending on the location of your dorm (mine was built in the 40s I think) you may find rats running around. We had a rat problem one week. I saw one running down my room and then it disappeared into the wall.
