But after running countless runs, two marathons, long walks and all the other activities I’ve been involved in over the years I should know better what works for me and what doesn’t. For years I had severe food allergies so I went on a diet to see what was causing my problems, I had celiac tests that didn’t come back here or there and spent 11 years on a low carb diet. and healthy foods that my friends say look and feel like cardboard. The intolerance was so severe at one point that even though my fork met the mashed potato before it touched my food I was holding my left arm in pain. I slowly started to reintroduce my high calorie foods which was difficult for me but now I can eat anything else. The decision to start doing this was because I wanted to be active, I wanted to run, I wanted to play football, I wanted to ride a bike but I couldn’t do much for a long time and take care of myself without starting potatoes. the rice returned to my plate and I had to try to make it work.

Burning and hydration for endurance is something that is easy to get wrong and especially during a fire. If I’m not worrying that what I’m eating is junk (I’m digging into a bowl of Fatboys chips and sticking my fork into my salad) I’m worrying that what I’ve eaten is enough to sustain me in the future. a long distance or a fast ride, it gives my body a good workout instead of cheap and fun and healthy. Then there’s the conundrum of burning more calories than you eat so you don’t eat enough to replace the calories burned. My head is spinning. Sometimes I can go for a quick ride or run and feel good then there have been the odd time I’ve been so busy with home life that when I leave the house and run errands I forget to eat enough and pay and that’s what happened in the days leading up to Ashby’s 100, a 105 mile race. + which last year was a fun ride within the cycling club and was later made an official event this year. Having spent the few days before the event being woken up at magical time to ‘Gizzard Puke’ the youngest member of the house, I had plenty of time to train for my upcoming triathlon, followed by holiday shopping and busy trying to pack last minute essentials and helping to prepare the bikes for the Ashbys 100 so I didn’t have sleep on the first days of climbing, I hadn’t really eaten and didn’t even think about how hot it would be. per day.

The morning of the ride I got up and put on my Primal Ambassador Custom gear, I left the Neon Crush Arm warmers on as the day was supposed to be hot and I sat on the edge of the bed looking at my pile of socks and thinking about what I was doing. to wear, Electric Shock or Panda socks, it’s always difficult to choose but it ends with Pictures. While drinking my black coffee my brain and stomach could not coordinate, I was waking up and could not finish my breakfast. I had packed gels, flapjacks and salt tablets in my jersey pocket, enough to see me through the feed station at mile 50 and off to meet the other riders for the 8.30am start. There were about 20 riders who participated in the event. Coach Matt gave us a pep talk including making sure we had enough breakfast. You know when you’re at a school assembly and the principal calls the students on something, wanting to know the culprit, that’s how I felt at that moment and inside I let out a little “oh!” Following this he reiterated the time to take gels and keep hydrated, “If you feel thirsty it’s too late,” he said, to which I felt relieved as I was one of those and we had 50 miles to go. First stop for food, how bad can it be.

We set off leisurely, chatting as we made our way to the open spaces of St Ives and Warboys, it was starting to get warm in the morning. As we turned into one lane a few of us slowed down to wait for a few others on the way back to make sure they saw us before trying to play with the pack ahead. Passing through rural areas lined with fields of bright yellow rapeseed, the riders resembled the image of the Tour De France riding in sunflowers. A few riders who came back from injury had just started to feel the effects at 40 kilometers when we were pushing the wind and going back, I was feeling good but my bike was too heavy and this was the reason. to change the tires from my usual SWorks Gripton that began to wear, to the temporary road tires that came as a spare set with my CX bike and I was not going to continue with them. The roll of the tires was very different and was heavy in comparison, this started working hard on my legs as the group started to push into the storm. Even though I was in the middle of the pack I suddenly found myself falling behind and working hard to keep up with the group which was sitting around 19mph, but nothing unusual about the pace. Desperately disembarking again I rode up to the stop where everyone gathered for a quick drink and regroup. We only had 4 miles to go until the food stop and I thought it would be a good point to check what I wanted to do, continue or call it a day at 50 and I didn’t want to stop.



From the dinner table, we met each other to be happy because he was doing things for us, to eat other foods. It was getting really hot and most of the riders had already done a ton of cycling by 11.30am. I felt better after eating and was ready to finish the second half. All was going well until poor Bill, who was leading the event had a freehub machine 10 miles into the second half of the ride. Waiting for a replacement bike, the riders rested and took off on the grass, a good opportunity to top up the sunscreen, hydrate and crack some serious jokes before our 2nd stop in Denver which was about 80 miles in. I started to feel better after eating so now it was just a matter of keeping my energy up, ignoring the tire pressure and the rising temperature. 5 kilometers before we reach our second place, the sun is beating down on us and we want to get to our destination, Coach Matt was tired and I needed a distraction since the heat was getting to me so we started playing I Spy, its funny how something obvious takes so long to figure out. When we finally arrived at The Jennings Arms, a riverside bar in Denver, we parked our bikes together and headed to the bar for some snacks and drinks and then headed back home.

Walking along the river we passed river boats and exchanged waves, poor Bill suffered a 2nd and 3rd machine within minutes with a puncture. The second time I took off I began to feel unsteady. The heat hit me big time and the strength to push my legs started to fall back and I started to collapse. The main group had moved on and it was just Bill and I for company. Coach Matt was at the front of the pack but I realized Bill and I weren’t in the group, coming back to us he saw I was struggling. Having saved his Cherry Bakewell Torq gel for a “special occasion” he handed it to me along with his pack of Dextrose sweets and told me to eat it with the gel. While I was walking around doing what I was told, I also had to answer a few of his questions including the answer to the letter ‘D’ from our old I Spy. Speech was made difficult because the gel and Torq had started to mix with foam almost like a magnesium tablet. This made me laugh and laughing was all I could do. After giving me some Soreen Malt bread, Matt told me to eat it, and chewing on some Torq gel and Dextrose candy, I couldn’t stop laughing as the malt bread got stuck in my teeth as the bubbles disappeared. Within a few minutes the combination of all three started to show and Matt explained the 3 levels of energy reserves to me and maybe, combined with the heat and my initial climb probably put me in the 3 energy reserves very quickly. I continued riding for 9 kilometers before the group came to another water station, some drilling and a sweeper to take me home. I was fine and hit the wall at 91 miles!!!!!!!

The next day I decided that I should make up the distance I had not completed the day before for no other reason than unfinished business. Undeterred on a hot baking day, I headed to the sunny village, warmed up and hydrated in my Theta shorts and Jersey with the intention of just enjoying the view and letting my legs cycle for about 10 miles… 27 miles. then I got home. It was so hot that the rest of the week was a matter of slowing down. It was too hot to put in the effort in training for my triathlon and I didn’t want to injure myself. Staying quiet for a long time, was not in my nature but I made good use of my free time when the weather was nice and shopped around with the intention of buying a third belt and straps, however, I came home empty handed. but he had ordered a new road bike. It’s like when I went to the shops with a Fatboy bank card for coffee and tomato sauce and came home with 10 shopping bags without sauce or coffee.

The following week my new bike, the Liv Envie Advanced 1 was ready for me at Rutland Cycles, after fitting the bike and adding aero water bottles I could take the bike home. It’s been a lot of fun riding this bike and practicing the swim part on the triathlon bike has put a big smile on my face. So, with the lessons I’ve learned about eating right, considering the weather and the fat burning process that’s going well and I’m waiting for my first Triathlon, I just hope it’s not too hot otherwise I’ll just keep swimming.
