o What is the earliest evidence that our ancestors ate soup? About 6000 BC! And what kind of soup do you think it was? The hippo!

So, in the late 1700s, it seems that the King of France loved himself so much that he had his royal chefs make a soup that would allow him to see the dish for himself. Sheesh! But as a result, consommé (a clear sauce) was born.

o Since we’re talking about French, here’s another interesting soup story that I had to include on this Soup Facts page. In the French court of Louis XI, most women’s food was soup. Guess what it was? They were afraid that chewing would cause wrinkles on their faces! If this were true today, it would put an end to plastic surgery!

o This one has me confused! And yet, it is true that it combines fashion, eating utensils and of course, soup! Here’s why: Why did thin soups become so popular in Europe in the 17th century? The spoon came out. (How did he eat the soup before he got the spoon???) Why was the spoon made? Because of the latest fashion: the big and tight ruffles that men and women of the great courts wore around their necks. (I suspect this is how magicians get their ideas for their costumes!) The design of the spoon was to match those big ruffled dresses and keep them from dripping!

o The first liquid food most babies get is breast milk, often called “Breast Milk.”

o Frank Sinatra always asked for chicken soup and rice to be made available to him in his dressing room before going on stage. He said it always clears his mind and settles his stomach.

o Another famous person who loved soup was Andy Warhol. He told someone that he painted famous soup cans because that’s what he ate for lunch – every day for 20 years!

o Soup has long been known to heal all ailments of the heart, mind, soul and body… and this old Yiddish proverb says it best… “Problems are easier to take with soup than without.”

o “Of soup and love, the first is the best.” – from an old Spanish proverb. (Sometimes, I think it’s true!)
