From a Dream to Reality – Maggie’s Story
As a young child, Maggie Steyn used to spend time helping her mother in the kitchen cooking and baking, but she dreams of one day making different rusks with her own brand. Over the years he learned about the restaurant business, helping his father after school in his busy restaurant located in Goodwood, Cape Town.
After graduating from school, Maggie began a journey to fulfill her dreams. He gained business management experience in highly competitive marketing and management practices as a branch manager with the Foschini Group of stores, as well as with the International corporations of Old Mutual and Sanlam.
However, Maggie never forgot her childhood desire to cook rusks professionally. She married her farmer husband Stephen and became part of village life on their farm, Soutfontein, which is located between Malmesbury and Moorreesburg in the Swartland, Western Cape of South Africa. She raised four children, Steven, Emma, Lara, Jana, and began to make her dream of cooking at rusk come true!
With only R262, he bought the first batch of flour, and started baking the sardines in a small oven, with only two baking trays. His first commercial job was as a vendor at a local Wine Festival, selling jams, cakes, and rusks from a plastic table. However, among the customers who bought rusks from Maggie, were local branch managers of major grocery stores.
This opportunity helped fuel Maggie’s dream of success, because they asked her if she could cook rusks in their stores!
From humble beginnings, Maggie has grown into a business success story. Given his difficulties in selling his rusks for resale, the first building he built to cook in was a 17th century farmhouse that soon became too small for his business. His modern, efficient, clean factory built on the farm, now has two commercial ovens, and a third is about to be purchased.
Maggie is fulfilling her dream as she realizes the importance of the rusks in her home. Maggie was selected to enter a business incubator program, run by a large retailer; is designed to encourage selected small businesses to reach their full potential.
It is Maggie’s dream and her desire to continue to achieve her future goals of satisfying and creating more buyers for her “Maggie se Spens” game, both nationally and internationally. His satisfaction will also be in providing work to many people, who today are unemployed and struggling to survive. Maggie is living her dream, proving to all potential entrepreneurs, that anything you see, is possible!
