SPAM – Don’t Delete It
SPAM® originated in 1937, produced by Hormel Foods, and the military found it to be vital to feeding our troops during WWII. (The soldiers had several favorite names for this new drug, which are not published, but they still accepted all kinds of meat.) In the front of the house, it had shelves for housekeepers, it was flexible and it served fast food for children. Although many speculate that the name stands for “smelling meat,” Hormel officials are not talking. Of course in the 30s, who would have predicted that the same words (below) would refer to spam emails.
After WWII, the Hawaiian colony embraced the canned meat that GIs ate and made it part of their diet. Fried Spam and rice became a popular meal at any time of the day, and what better combination than a pile of pineapple on top of these fresh lobsters. To this day, Spam is consumed more in our 50s than anywhere else, and they don’t apologize. About 7 million copies of Spam products are purchased annually. Even some fast food restaurants have it on their menu.
Although originally American, this unique canned meat has grown in popularity around the world, and fans everywhere have made their mark on it. In the Philippines, several well-known restaurants have this specialty, which offers a wide variety of food at affordable prices. For Brits, Spam n chips is their favorite version of their main fish range. (With lots of vinegar). On the island of Guam, consumption is over 16 cans per person per year. Although you won’t find this product anywhere in Africa, most of South America or Western Europe, Spam is enjoyed in more than 40 countries around the world. And an impressive 12.8 cans are consumed every second. Back in the US this product has a museum in Austin, Minnesota.
The recipe competition is held every year at 26 major exhibitions of our country and regions, where chefs take the competition very seriously. Unique and unusual dishes are introduced that incorporate Spam into every kind of food imaginable: Tex-Mex tacos, Italian pasta, Asian dishes, American toast, sushi, breakfast mixes, hash, the list is endless.
Some of the famous people who say they like Spam are Dwight Eisenhower, Margaret Thatcher, Gracie Allen, and Monty Python. Some famous chefs have created special recipes and cookbooks to showcase its endless possibilities. There is no denying his popularity and standing in the US and around the world, counting millions of loyal fans.
Okay, so maybe you don’t eat pork. Or maybe you think that canned meat is unhealthy. Take heart. The Hormel Company also produces a Turkish brand. Want to eat.
