A Travel Through Belize
Look! The man is screaming from the bus station to Belize City. Undoubtedly, you are worried that they are trying to distract you to help you get rid of your belongings. After all, Belize City is known as one of the most dangerous cities in Central America. Instead, you are seen by thousands of birds flying in the sky as if to say, “Welcome to my country, enjoy the beauty of Belize”.
Whatever your vision of Central America is, check the door before entering this beautiful and welcoming country. Many guides tell you to “get out of Belize City and go to the islands.” It’s too bad, because it’s causing people to miss out on meeting the proud and helpful citizens of this wonderful town.
Cruise ships stop here frequently and push tourists to Tikal in Guatemala, or to Amgergris Caye on the coast. The port is well designed and you can spend time walking around the shops in the nice terminal. However, walking around the city is where you get the real Caribbean vibe.
Founded by the English in the late 16th century, Belize City is home to a mix of Colonial and Creole culture. Dine on international cuisine, or enjoy local fare at Jembel’s Jerk Pit or Big Daddy’s Diner. Music pumps from the shops as people smile, you speak good English, and turn to your friends and speak in clear Creole. The official language in Belize is English, but you will often hear a mixture of Spanish, Creole, Mayan and German throughout the country.
After soaking up the culture and cuisine in the country’s largest city, catch a water taxi to Caye Caulker. For $10, you will be transported to paradise. This small island is a beautiful place to get to, less populated than its more developed neighbor Ambergris Caye.
The laid-back island atmosphere has a Jamaican vibe, with reggae blaring from the bars and restaurants. Walk down dirt roads to find a beachfront hotel and you can spend as little as $20 a room. Only golf carts drive on the island, so you don’t have to worry about air pollution or noise. The hard work of the residents to preserve their culture and great development is not in the future.
Located 1 mile from the Belize Barrier Reef, it has some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world. Grab a boat to take you to Shark Ray Alley and you’ll swim with the sharks while the manta rays bother you. The marine reserve for the past 12 years, marine and marine life is the second in the world. Dolphin sightings are common and you will be sure to see barracuda, octopus, stingrays, eels and crabs.
For the more experienced, The Blue Hole is not to be missed. Made famous by Jacques Cousteau, dive 150 meters into this crumbling cave like sharks circling above hanging stalactites. If you are not a diver, take an open water course.
The prices are good and you will have the opportunity to see a lot of wildlife and admire the sea.
Finding a company to go with is easy, just walk down the main dirt road and you’ll find vendors and snorkel shops lined up to take you out.
If diving into the water with natural enemies isn’t your cup of tea, take a cruise to visit some of the islands. Belize has several islands and you can take a trip to have lunch on the beach or enjoy an island drink at the top of Ambergris Caye.
Caye Caulker may not be very developed, but you can still enjoy good food from seafood, to pasta and barbecue. The nightlife is not wild, but you can find a nice bar to enjoy a drink or two, look out over the water and swing on a hammock or listen to live music until the evening.
Indeed, Belize has many sights to see. It has rainforests and islands, as well as the largest caves in Central America. There are wild animals from Howler Monkeys to Jaguars. Like its neighbors, it has Mayan Ruins scattered throughout the country for you to enjoy and beautiful beaches can be found everywhere, the best place to stay in Placencia inland.
It may take weeks to explore all that Belize has to offer, but if you have the time, then it’s worth the investment.
