Family Fun in Paphos

A family holiday should be well thought out and well planned. Landscaping and shelters need good facilities for children and activities to keep them busy and to be fun and convenient for parents. At your doorstep in Europe is the beautiful island of Cyprus with its many sandy beaches, children’s attractions and 5* family friendly accommodation. Cyprus could be your next holiday destination.

Cyprus is at the crossroads of three continents, where east meets west and something new awaits you around every corner. The island is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, so you have plenty of water activities for you and your family. Budget airlines from most UK airports fly to Cyprus and the four-and-a-half-hour journey will get you into the sun (so hopefully the kids won’t be quiet). Flights start from £150 return per person at the start of summer in May, some airlines may offer family packages so be sure to shop around to get the best deals. With all that Cyprus has to offer, you will not be disappointed.

Paphos

When you’re trying to decide where to go for your family holiday in Cyprus, you’ll find that Paphos, a beautiful little harbor town on the west side of the island, has some of the best reviews. Paphos hotels welcome families with open arms and offer many special deals and activities for children. Paphos has a long history, it has many interesting archaeological sites, including the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, the Tomb of the Kings, the baths of Aphrodite, the famous Moses of the House of Dionysos (protected by Unesco. ) and Paphos Fort. Cyprus is well known for its warm weather all year round but for families it may be best to visit before or after the summer season. Consider booking your holiday between March and May which coincides well with the Easter school holidays. The maximum temperature during these months ranges from 20 – 30 degrees Celsius, so remember to pack sun cream!

Family activities

With any family vacation you need to take care of yourself and the kids. Having a daily itinerary before you go there is a great way to plan your vacation. Paphos has some great family activities on offer, here are a few suggestions:

The amusement park and water park is a great day out for the family, an activity that both adults and children can enjoy. Aphrodite Water Park, located at the eastern end of Kato Paphos’ coastal road, is close to many Paphos hotels, boasting that you are staying nearby. There is a large and varied selection of rides and attractions. Large changing rooms and secure lockers are some of the amenities available at the park. One of the best things is that everything you buy inside the park is delivered to your wristband meaning you don’t have to carry cash around, which in some busy parks can be a security risk. A day at the water park for an adult (12 to 12 years old) will cost 29 euros, children between 3-11 years old will cost 16 euros and babies under three years old are free. If you think you might want to visit the park again while on vacation you can get a two-day pass, adult tickets 46 euros each and children 26 euros.

If the beautiful scenery of the water park is not for you and your family, but you still enjoy the water, then a boat trip from the coast of Paphos may be a better option. With a number of scheduled cruises departing from Paphos harbour, guests can choose from half-day or full-day cruises depending on what your full holiday schedule looks like! There are also several glass bottom boats: they usually depart from Paphos and travel along the coast to the famous Vera K ship which gives you the opportunity to admire the hidden treasures of the Mediterranean, see tropical fish and interesting marine life without getting wet. The tours last just one hour and depart from Paphos Harbor several times throughout the day.

If the kids are craving some fun, the Jolly Roger is the boat for them. It is a classic cruise ship that offers a great day out for the whole family. It runs from Paphos to Coral bay and then anchors for swimming and snorkelling. You can have a buffet style lunch while exploring the area and enjoy family entertainment such as limbo, face painting, game shows and pirate shows, hopefully no kids, or adults will get bored!

Wild animals

The island of Cyprus is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea and is in the middle of the migration routes of millions of birds. Cyprus has a list of 374 birds which makes it a great place for wildlife lovers. Luckily Paphos is home to some amazing birds at the Paphos Bird and Animal Park. While visiting the park you will encounter parrots, badgers, emus, ostriches, toucans and even pigeons among many other species. Few of the animals that you will see in this park are camels, deer, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, snakes and many more. The park has a restaurant and snack bar and a children’s farm where children can get close to rabbits, pigs, chickens and goats. If this is something you know you and your family will love then the park is open to the public from October to March (winter season) and April to September (summer season), the entrance fee for adults is 15.50 euros and for children it is 8.50.

Where to eat

With all the sightseeing and activities you will have, you need to have energy. Cypriot cuisine is full of hot Mediterranean flavors, there are many restaurants and cafes to choose from from Cypriot, Middle Eastern, and British. There are a selection of restaurants around the Old Harbor that offer a variety of culinary styles with interesting views. In most places you will find a children’s menu due to Paphos’ popularity as a family destination. Paphos hotels have a variety of cuisines served in their restaurants/bars. Many resorts have extensive children’s meals, including lunch and dinner with children’s options; along with the food there will also be free drinks. That will help keep the cost down and allow the adults to do a little more!

Paphos hotel

Paphos has a lot to offer the family holiday maker but there is one thing to be aware of. Some hotels in Paphos have different activities and programs that are organized during the day and evening to keep you and your children entertained. These activities may include Wii tournaments, drawing and t-shirt making, table tennis and other games. While the children are in organized activities, well taken care of by the hotel staff, the adults can relax by the pool or educate themselves on a Greek course, a cooking course or a fitness class. You may not need to leave your hotel with all the activities it has to offer, but make sure you get out to see the ancient attractions Paphos has to offer!

If you’ve never been to Cyprus before and don’t know the language, here’s a quick guide with key terms that kids and parents can use.

Finally, here are a few tips on transportation. Paphos has a newly developed airport which can now be used instead of Larnaca Airport (Maingate of Cyprus). The new Paphos airport is a 10-15 minute drive from most hotels while Larnaca is over an hour away. Airport transfers should be available as part of your accommodation, if there aren’t many airport rental car options that are open 24 hours. If you want to travel comfortably with the family then a rental car is the best option, but remember to drive on the left. If you prefer to rely on public transport, it can be cheap and convenient but not the best if you have small children. Buses can be cheap but you have to be patient, they don’t run regularly and they only run on certain routes. Why not hire a bike to get around Paphos, this way it’s cheaper and you can see the sights in your own time.

Paphos is a great family destination full of fun activities, historic sites, wildlife and friendly people. If you can book a flight in advance, accommodation that will meet all your needs and see what suits your family then it will be an affordable price that everyone can enjoy.
