Barbados Restaurants: Josef’s Restaurant Is The Best
Choosing a vacation destination is not easy. There are so many places to go, and so many different things to do. If you are a cooking teacher, Barbados may be the place to go. Restaurants in Barbados are some of the best restaurants in the world. In particular, Josef’s Restaurant, combines an incomparable view with exquisite cuisine. Josef’s restaurant appeared on the Barbados restaurant scene years ago. About six years ago, Patron/Chef Thomas Harris took over and has made Josef into one of Barbados’ best restaurants.
What sets Josef apart from the rest of the restaurants on the island is the joy, love and creativity of the food. Yosef’s was originally a waterfront building in the heart of Christ Church. After being converted into a restaurant, the original appearance was preserved while minor changes were made to the interior. The renovations include two romantic living rooms filled with plush couches, coffee tables, and comfortable chairs. It serves as the beginning of an unforgettable culinary experience. Patrons enjoy slow cocktails before being escorted by friendly staff to the restaurant, nestled between the garden of the old building and the calm sea. There are about 9 waterside tables, along with 20 or so that overlook the water. Two gazebos are also installed for comfortable dining, raised slightly outside the garden for intimate dining.
Gastronomy is very different from that of many other restaurants in Barbados. Most of the restaurants in Barbados offer “modern” cuisine, often over the top. It is funny that last year it was very popular and fashionable to add spices and herbs to homemade sorbets. On my last visit to Barbados, every good restaurant displayed this on their menus. Every restaurant in Barbados, that is, except Josef’s. Those who follow cooking methods know that this was hot in the late 80s to be restored in the modern era due to the lack of innovation. Josef’s writings do not fall into these problems. It features sophisticated, modern dishes with Asian flavors and French flavors; including local seafood and meat and fruits and vegetables available.
Restaurants in Barbados also have great wine lists. Because Josef’s wine list is constantly changing to match the latest and best vintages, it would be unwise to make any assumptions. Needless to say, great French selections and finds from South and North America are available. Josef’s also has a special reserve list full of cellar options from around the world to complement Harris’ creations.
More is coming from this Barbados restaurant. Thomas Harris is in the process of converting the upstairs of the farmhouse, which currently serves as a workshop, into a Japanese restaurant featuring authentic Asian cuisine and sushi made with fresh local fish. While some sushi and Asian items are already listed on the main menu, Harris wants to delve deeper into his Asian culinary skills, offering customers a variety of dishes based on Josef’s experience.
If you’ve eaten at almost every restaurant in Barbados, a stop at Josef’s makes the trip complete. I could go on and on about Josef, but, I’ll leave you with the following tips for your meals there:
Appetizer- Try the lobster with mango salsa and thai red curry sauce or the shredded duck leg with three-color peppers and mooshu pancakes.
Entree- Fresh fish of the day served with tomato fondue, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, and sweet saffron or herb sauce topped with lamb with sweet peas, spinach paste, roasted vegetables and mint.
Dessert- Freshly made lemon mouse with mango sorbet. Try this paired with a glass of ice wine.
