Little Known Facts and Other Uses for Rolling Pins

Who invented it? Why was it created? Is it okay to take out the dough for bread and cookies only? I will answer this and more…very interesting things about our need for rolling pins!

First, not to confuse a rolling pin with a bowling pin (or any other pin), a rolling pin is a cylindrical utensil with one handle on each side that is used in the kitchen mainly to break and make dough.

According to the history, many ancient people used round wood (perhaps branches with bark removed) to crush, or grind or crush different foods. The old saying is true, “Nothing new in this world”! He also used hard clay, and glass bottles. Apparently, glass bottles came later. Regardless of the materials used, it would have been an ancient pin shape compared to what we have now.

The modern wooden pin is very different from the old styles. Not only does it now have handles, but thanks to the invention of JW Reed in the late 1800’s, the handles are now self-rolling without an actual cylinder. In the past (and I remember this, it must have been my Grandmothers pin!) the handles were one part of the cylinder and you couldn’t hold the handles and roll the pin. Being one piece, if you grip the handles too hard, the pin will just scratch the surface of your dough- achieving… well, not much! I seem to remember a big pile of dough at the end of my board! JW Reed must have faced similar problems that led him to design and manufacture a rod that would allow the cylinder to rotate independently of the handles.

I promised you a few famous facts. Here’s one: in the United States alone, there are between 600,000 and 750,000 rolling pins made each year! Where in the world are all these pins used? I have found that having just one in my kitchen is enough!

Pins are not just made of wood anymore. Glass jars are popular in Italy, especially, they use cold wine bottles! The French prefer marble pegs over marble boards. Some countries are creating wasteland, filling the center with cold water. This can be the same as Italian and a bottle of wine. Here in the United States, we have used wood mainly. Back in JW Reed’s day, pine was plentiful and a soft wood, easy to cut or polish. Today, the most popular are Ash and Maple. Specifically, Rock Maple, because it is a very hard wood (as you can tell by the name alone!). Ash and Rock Maple are mainly used by professional cooking schools, bakeries and luxury stores.

Are there other roles to roll, other than bakeries and comedies that feature grumpy housewives chasing children and husbands around the house? I found two. Thinking outside the box, they are great for kids when doing arts and crafts. They can bring relief to sore muscles and joints. The hole can be filled with ice and water for the pain, or with hot water to loosen the tight muscles. You can also lie down and use a rolling pin to roll your feet, giving them a much needed massage after standing all day cooking in the kitchen!
