The HSC Mindset

We are now in Term 4 of 2009. This means that all year 11s have just moved on to year 12, and are in their first HSC Term. Now that’s the real thing – all school tests count for your internal ranking. Your work and exams at school will affect your ATAR – and your final HSC exam is less than a year away.

It’s time to get the right mindset to achieve your desired ATAR.

How to have goals

Goal setting is a motivational tool that can help you stay focused and ensure your HSC success. Staying focused and motivated throughout the 2 years from the start of year 11 will go a long way in helping you achieve the ATAR you want for your ideal University course. Staying focused and motivated is a major challenge students face. This is where goal setting can help.

There are many books written on the subject, but the most important thing is to study dropping big targets to small jobs possible. For example, let’s say your main goal for the HSC is to achieve the ATAR you want for your University studies. This is a common goal, which all students who are interested in HSC are committed to their studies.

Break down big goals into smaller goals

So how can you break this goal down into small, actionable tasks?

First, resolve to break the habit of procrastination. Accept that in order for great things to happen, there must be a lot of work that needs to be done by you. Think of it as the ‘law of hard work and reward’, or the old saying: ‘you reap what you sow’. To achieve a high ATAR, you have to study – there are no two ways about it. Do all your homework in school (and teaching!), and ask questions until you understand each point before moving on.

Now, given that hard work and study are required, you should think about what you can do each day to achieve your goal. The second step is to find a consistent amount of training that you can do each day. Commit to sticking to these amounts, day in and day out, for as long as you can. Make a plan to divide your study time between your studies. Invest more time in your weak subjects – this method usually increases your score (due to the diminishing returns on success in each subject). Make a schedule, commit and KEEP doing it.

The third and final step is START TODAY. Remember that there is no longer any reason to procrastinate because you have accepted that hard work is necessary to reap great rewards.

Keep small goals realistic The important thing to remember when setting small goals is to keep them realistic and achievable. For example, let’s say your goal is to do well on an upcoming Math test, and you need to master integration and Polynomials before the test. So what you can do is break down what exercises you need to follow on a daily basis and do those sessions every day. Save as much money as possible, but don’t be lazy about it. Do your best – then take a break.

To benefit yourself Self-improvement is an important part of all activities. It is wrong to believe that success in HSC comes from full commitment to personal life and free time for the entire two years.

While it is important to set goals, it is also important that encourage the achievement of goals and related awards. Decide for yourself before starting any goal what the reward for that goal is. For example, you might have a goal of achieving 90% on your next Physics exam. You might think that this is difficult for you, because Physics is one of your weak subjects. So you can decide that when you achieve this goal, you can go out for a day or two, or have a party, or buy yourself something nice. However, it is important that your work is related to transportation. Because studying requires you to be at home/school/library, it is not good to spend your free time doing something at home, like playing computer games all day.

Study smart, study hard Have you ever heard people tell you to “study smart, not hard”? This is one of the most dangerous things to believe, because it leads students to wrong ideas. Yes, there are ways to study smarter, because it is based on understanding how the HSC works, how the scaling of the HSC works, what percentages are required for a certain letter, etc. such as how to set a schedule, set goals (which this article teaches!), and how to maximize the use of your resources (teachers, books, etc.). However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work as hard as you can. In fact, every time you hear someone tell you “study smart, not hard”, you should answer “why not do both?”.

“Study smart AND study hard” – that’s the way to get 99.95.

Things you can do to study smarter:

  • Educate yourself on how the HSC works, such as HSC scaling, how the ATAR is calculated, which marks count towards your ATAR, and more.
  • Make the most of your teachers in school and teaching
  • Use good books for your studies. Sometimes, the writings of former students/friends etc., even teachers at school, do not make sense as a book.
  • Study with friends who are as dedicated as you

What you can do to learn more:

  • Stop procrastinating – start today!
  • Make a schedule, follow it
  • Have small goals that are part of your big goals

Final thoughts

The key to HSC success is not being ‘naturally bright’. It’s not the school you go to (although having great teachers helps a lot, you can always find good teachers to teach). The most important thing is consistency in hard work.

Nothing worthwhile comes easily. Half effort does not produce half results, it does not produce results. Work, constant work and hard work, is the only way to achieve lasting results.” – Hamilton Holt
