From McLennan County’s Jim Lewis, a judge, comes a quick and easy casserole. Soups from Hopkins County, Cheese Dip from Hill County, and Gobs from Ellis County guide readers into the kitchen. Yes, Gobs. Chad Adams, the judge, hands out what appears to be a winning cookie. I want to try it soon. Gobs and Cornbread Salad from Freestone County will appear on our dinner table next week. I know I can count on Sheriff Ralph Billings’ salad recipe.

Taco Soup, Rotel, Fruit-Stuffed Tortilla, Hummingbird Cake, and Banana Bread all use packaged ingredients. Tom Green County’s DPS Randy Swick offers Swick’s Love Muffins, muffins with chocolate chips as a topping prove to be just that. Jefferson County Law Judge Al Gerson and his recipes for Braised Doves, Chicken Pork Jambalaya, Italian Batter Friend shark bites and Quailgerson show a man who loves to cook, loves to eat or maybe loves to do both. Bean Dip, Crawfish and Rice, Pretzel Salad, Jailhouse Rolls, Chicken N Rice, Lasagna, I’m hungry. A Southern cookbook wouldn’t be complete with a Pecan Pie recipe, and I found it: Jasper County Judge Joe Wilkinson offered his recipe. Apple Dumplings, Fresh Apple Cake, Aunt Jean’s Coconut Pie, Rum Cake and Kay Bailey Hutchinson Cousin Susie’s Perfect Fudge; this is one book to review that I will be keeping, and using.

“In 1999, the Historic Courthouse Preservation Program to provide assistance to counties in need of courthouse renovations was established. The Texas Judicial Cookbook is a special tribute to the monuments of justice and leadership, created by the hands of pioneering Texans. resident judges, former judges and other public officials and Governments are encouraged by the beautiful images of these artifacts.”

The Texas Judicial Cookbook is a work of art all around. Recipes, 59, is my favorite brand to see and use; family favorites which means that most of the time the recipes are shared by the family and the children eat them, they can be made from ingredients on hand and do not require a long preparation time. The amount of photos included is beautiful. Courthouses built in a time when life was modest, beauty was valued and the rotundas, stained glass and jewels of the building are worth the price of the book whether the buyer is interested in recipes or not. For cookbook collectors this is a treasure trove of beauty and recipes.

Sulfur Springs, Hopkins County has one of the most beautiful courthouses in the county. The Romanesque Revival design by James Riely Gordon was built in 1895. The two photos that show the building from several views, close up of the butterflies on the flowers from the building are impressive. Judge Millsap’s recipe is completed with a close-up of the Courthouse tower and information about the architect and a note of great interest is included along with a photo of Judge Millsap.

These buildings feature many types of Beaux-Arts, Classical Revival, Renaissance Revival, Second Empire, Texas Renaissance designs and some of the designs were created by designers James Riely Gordon, Jaspar N Preston and Son, Henry Phelps noted designers. It seems that Mr. Gordon is the architect to create more architecture than anyone else.

Recipes include cake mix, dry pie crust, packaged tortillas, canned vegetables, Ramen noodles, canned soup, canned chicken broth, Bisquick, frozen whip and pretzels. These are real recipes by real people for use in real homes by busy people. I love this.

I am a history buff and cookbook collector. The Texas Judicial Cookbook satisfied both tastes, and, unlike other cookbooks, I’ve written several recipes to use with my family. I loved reading about different courts and looking at their pictures almost as much as I read recipes. The meal season should prove ‘Texas’ for the next few days and will feature salads, breads, entrees and desserts all made using these recipes.

I received a hard copy for review. I enjoyed reading, happy to advise. The Texas Judicial Cookbook will be a great addition to the kitchen cookbook shelf, as well as reading lists for the home economics teacher, coordinator and 4-H leader.
