Hello from Ottawa – Skating on the Rideau Canal – Officially the World’s Largest Skating Rink

There’s no denying it: Ottawa is known as one of the coldest cities in the world (just in terms of temperature). But does that mean you stay at home in the winter and mope? Of course not! Ottawa has turned a potential role into something important and is showing us how to celebrate winter.

First, there’s Winterlude, Ottawa’s annual winter festival, which takes place this year from February 3 to 19, 2006. Winterlude is expected to bring in more than 650,000 winter revelers and includes tons of events: concerts, special events, cooking shows, food parties. and the list goes on. Skating on the Rideau Skateway, about 8 km on the world’s largest ice rink, was our main reason for coming to Ottawa. In fact, we had been to Ottawa about 3 years ago and because of the warm weather Winterlude was hot for us that year (I think the proper term for the event would be “Waterlude”).

But our previous experiences did not discourage us, so this year Theresa and I decided to go back and pray for good weather so that we can see the water skiing and entertainment area for ourselves.

Incidentally, the Rideau Canal Skateway has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest natural ice rink. The skateway is 7.8 kilometers long and takes you from the Rideau Bridge to Dow’s Lake.

We left early around 10am in the dead of winter, but even then, the skateway was packed, and the ice path from Confederation Park to the skateway entrance on the other side of the river was packed. and people in long queues.

We strapped on our skates and put our shoes behind us which would give us the flexibility to leave the ice at any time and continue our exploration and walking. Or if we’re really tired, we can hop on the “Sno-Bus” that connects Lake Dow and Confederation Park for the entire Winterlude Festival for a low price of $2.50 (more on the OC Transpo website).

But, obviously we didn’t need the Sno-Bus, we walked down this amazing glacier all the way to the lake and never needed to rest. On this beautiful day with clear skies and surprisingly cold and windless conditions, skiing on the Rideau was a real treat. We couldn’t have picked a better day to explore the Rideau Canal on a roller coaster.

At various points along the route there were various rest stops, food stalls and special entertainment or information centers. Well represented is an iconic Ottawa landmark: Beavertails, a bakery that sells freshly baked cookies sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. A great food and source of energy on a cold day.

At the Via Rail Concord Station Rest Area an exhibit highlights Ottawa’s railroad history. It seems that many years ago, trains arrived in Ottawa near the Rideau Canal. On Fifth Avenue, young sports fans were enjoying the Canadian Tire JUMPStart Activity Center where they were jumping in the air on a trampoline system and putting their hockey skills to the test.

On Pig Island a special place with teepees has been set up to experience Aboriginal traditions, culture and cuisine. In addition, the area featured a woodcutter demonstration, a snowshoe workshop and Aboriginal music and drumming.

When I got to Dow’s Lake I went on to check out the 26th Annual Bed Race, a fundraising event that turned out to be a lot of fun, for a good cause. The Bed Race is organized by the Ottawa Kiwanis Club and the proceeds, approximately $50,000, will go to the Children’s Read-A-Thon.

But I had a lot to do, so I started skating on my way back to the village and by this time the skateway was very crowded. It looked like little and big, the whole family was out. Parents would pull their children on small sleds, or even push them in baby carriages for any distance. Everyone was having so much fun.

On the way back, someone caught my attention: a girl in a red skirt with red gloves and a red scarf is running in the canal, running, apparently just having a ball for a while. I went to him to know a little about him. She introduced herself as Sylvie, and told me that she came from a juggling family and that juggling was in her blood. He said that juggling is his life, and although he does not drive a luxury car, he is happy because he does what he loves.

After all that exercise I was very hungry, so I took off my skates and headed to the Rideau Centre, one of Ottawa’s largest malls. It’s near the Canal and it was pretty packed today. The Rideau Center offered a welcome opportunity to warm up and eat lunch in its food court.

Obviously I love outdoor activities and urban exploration, and sailing the Rideau Canal through downtown Ottawa combines both perfectly. I had a brief taste of this unique winter activity, and one thing is for sure: I will be back!!!
