The Perfect Christmas Holiday – 10 Reasons to Choose Schwangau – The Neuschwanstein Castle
If you are looking for a romantic and luxurious Christmas vacation, I will share with you a well-kept secret: Go to Schwangau and see the Neuschwanstein Castle village on the border of Germany and Austria.
Having lived in Dubai during the boom years, and seeing new buildings springing up like mushrooms, I do not believe that the Neuschwanstein Castle area is unspoiled. Although more than 1 million visitors visit Neuschwanstein every year (and 3 other castles within a distance of 3 kilometers), there are no high-rise buildings, no modern buildings (a tribute to the great local government that puts tradition over the economy). Instead you will feel as if time has stopped: old farms and mountain chalets abound and you see farmers on their bicycles leading their small cows on the road to the pastures – a wonderful sight of the heart in the first world. So here are my top 10 reasons to spend your Winter Holidays and Christmas in Schwangau and the Neuschwanstein Castle area.
1. Magic Neuschwanstein Castle & The King Ludwig Story
Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous and beautiful places in the world. It attracts more than 1 million visitors a year from all over the world and inspired Walt Disney to come up with the Magic Kingdom / Cinderella castle. Through Hollywood The Magic Kingdom and Cinderella Castle, however, can be better known than the original wonder in the Alpine mountains of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II in Bavaria. His mysterious death in a nearby lake is still rumored to this day.
2. Great Opportunities for Skiing and Winter Sports (downhill, nordic, ice skating)
Within 5-30 minutes by car you will have at least 5 ski resorts and 140km of skiing/snowboarding/ski touring at your disposal. There are ski resorts for all abilities and ski schools as well as ski/snowboard rentals almost everywhere. Almost all resorts have snowmobiles to provide extra snow if the weather doesn’t cooperate. With mountains scattered throughout the mountains, you’ll find plenty of reasons to sunbathe on hot toes or enjoy a meal at the Hut or “Kaiserschmarrn” (cracked bread with raisins and almonds with apple or cherry sauce). You can go skiing at night under Neuschwanstein Castle. Schwangau also offers 30 km of nordic skiing, 2 km of which are also lit up with night skiing. Finally, there are ski slopes from many of the mountain lodges and plenty of exercise and water skiing opportunities on one of the six nearby lakes.
3. Romantic German Christmas Markets
German Christmas markets (“Weihnachstmarkt”) are famous for their cozy and romantic Christmas season. You won’t want to miss them. Schwangau hosts a Christmas Market in November and Füssen, a three-kilometer old stone town hosts a magical Christmas Market in December. Imagine walking through a treasure trove of carved trees, “nutcrackers”, pottery to all kinds of Christmas decorations while the air is filled with the sweet aroma of mulled wine and freshly baked waffles.
4. Cleanliness Opportunities for Relaxation & Self-Care
The area has many health facilities such as massage, sauna, light therapy and more. The main attraction is the thermal pools at the royal spa (“Königliche Kristalltherme”). The connected indoor and outdoor pools allow you to enjoy the hot water and lift your head in the cool air – just imagine the feeling of the snow falling around you melting instantly as it hits the warm water. Across the fields you can see the nordic skiers skiing and behind the hill behind them emerges Neuschwanstein Castle. An event not to be missed!
5. Horseback Riding Through Winter Wonderland To See Wild Deer Feeding
You can rent your own horse-drawn sledge or join one of the regularly organized tours to castles, mountain huts or deer feeding stations in the forest. Wrapped in warm blankets you enjoy fresh air and breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and white plains. One of my favorite things is seeing wild deer being fed so close to you that you can touch them. To avoid rushing, you can’t even dare to take a breath trying to stay still when you see a male deer slowly approaching the whole herd: magic meets the wild!
6. New Year’s Eve Fun Everywhere You Look
In Germany New Year’s Eve is always celebrated with fireworks everywhere you look. Anyone in this country can buy and start their own and many families do. Why not try it yourself while you’re here? Imagine watching fireworks at one of the palaces catching your loved ones and making a wish for the new year. It makes for an unforgettable moment. At midnight many families perform a ritual called “Bleigießen” (pouring of lead) to predict good fortune for the new year. Small pieces of lead are melted in small pots over a candle flame. When the lead is liquid you pour it into a bowl of cold water where it immediately forms a shape. Everyone then enjoys interpreting the meaning of these patterns to predict the fortunes of the coming year. You can buy all the “lead pouring” equipment in supermarkets in Germany. Good luck J!
7. Delicious Special Local Food
The local food is delicious and you will find many restaurants to choose from. Pork dishes such as “Schweinshaxe” (pork knuckle) are common but game and fish are also specialties such as the famous “Apfelstrudel” with vanilla sauce or ice cream. “Brotzeit” which consists of large plates with cold meats and cheeses served with fresh German bread, freshly baked “Brezen” (big pretzels) and bread rolls. Finally, there are so many different types of local beer that you can try without going to a local brewery or cheese maker to see how the food is made?
8. Luxury & Rustic Hotels and Vacation Rentals
There are many luxury vacation rentals and luxury hotel rooms to choose from. Recently, more and more vacation homes meet the demand for a relaxing and luxurious vacation. Most of the architecture is preserved in the “Allgaeu” style, a variation of the mountain room using a lot of wood on the balcony and having wooden balconies on several sides of the building. There are also many working farms that offer accommodation and real farming life. For the world’s first country and the village of King’s Castles Schwangau has amazing dairy farms. So get ready to hear the good ringing of cowbells wherever you are 🙂
9. Welcoming with Friends People Who Celebrate Their Traditions
From the moment we arrived in the area, people have been very welcoming and welcoming. It is practical, authentic and real. Everyone is very proud of their traditions and heritage and throughout the year there are festivals showcasing dance, music, clothing (“Lederhosen” and “Dirndl”) and beer. Most people in Schwangau speak enough English to hold a conversation and many do so with surprising ease. There is also a growing international community in the area and visitors from all over the world. This makes Schwangau a true “world village”. When you come send me an email and I will help you find out about this dream.
10. General History
With so much natural beauty, high Alpine mountains and beautiful mountain lakes in the same small area, it’s no wonder that German bishops and Kings built their palaces here. Even Romans and Celts decided to settle here. In fact, the Via Claudia Augusta, one of the main Roman trade routes passes through Schwangau and connects the German province through Austria to Rome. You can discover Roman monuments and visit the entire Roman building on your magical journey to this unique place.
