How To Teach Fractions to Preschool and Kindergarten Students

As with all aspects of mathematics, small concepts should be explained to young children with appropriate hands in many activities and games. Concrete objects such as patterned blocks and 3D shapes help children understand new math or abstract concepts. Children should have small activities that:

  • combining their powers
  • ask them to try and evaluate
  • learn at their level, and
  • give them time to research another topic

It is important that preschool and kindergarten math programs provide opportunities for young children to be able to count numbers. Before children do operations (addition, subtraction…) with fractions, they need a lot of time for fractional games and play. This will help them to visualize the parts and understand that the parts are equal parts of the bigger thing, a skill necessary for higher thinking. It is not appropriate to teach the signs of fractions (1/2, 1/3 …) in primary school or kindergarten.

Small children are to work accordingly, skills that are important for the most advanced classrooms of the future:

  • be able to display the parameters and
  • understand that parts of parts are equal parts of a larger thing,

Start sections on cooking, stories, and games

Cooking introduces children to the language of fractions and helps them connect fractions to their everyday experiences. While participating in these activities, children become familiar with small words such as whole, part, half, third, quarter. For example – Cut a muffin in half, fill the cup in half, let’s use the whole orange part, put peanut butter on half of the bread and jam on the other half of the bread, cut the sandwich in half…

Use math puzzles and puppets to create simple stories

Here is an example of cycle time using an apple doll, 2 dolls and a basket:

Marty the Moose heard a knock on his door (a knock on a blackboard). He opened the door (grunting) and found his friend, Sam the squirrel..

Prepare and make the puppets take turns cutting the apples and share them, remembering that the purpose is to introduce the children and help them to know the concept of similar pieces that are part of the whole thing with small words like. half, quarter, triple.

Play simple small group games

Depending on the size of your class you may need to divide the class into smaller groups, with one half working in an independent math area with modeling clay, drawings, blocks or puzzles and the other half playing board games. When children play and play with small toys they acquire number knowledge.

As children play with small toys and controls, their ability to see small parts as equal parts of the whole will increase. For simple game ideas visit http://www.kindergarten-lessons.com/fraction_games.html
