Garfield High School Honors 84 Graduates

On Monday, June 19th, Richard Coone received an honorary diploma from Garfield High School, Seattle High School. He walked with Garfield High graduates at the graduation ceremony held at Qwest Field. Mr. Coone has waited sixty-five years to receive his diploma. In 1941, Mr. Coone was a senior at Garfield High School and was ready to graduate with his friends but World War II prevented him. During his junior year, Coone enlisted in the National Guard by lying about his age. He did this to be with his older brother. Joining Battery 146 Field Artillery Battalion, he had to serve with several students from Garfield High School. But before graduating, he was called to Fort Lewis and did not return home until 1945. After returning home he worked in Seattle for over thirty years. Garfield High School and other Seattle Schools are honored to recognize Dick Coone for his service to the State of Washington and our country.

Retired and Graduated Seniors

The Seattle Alliance of Black School Educators, an affiliate of the National Alliance of Black Educators, will hold a dinner honoring selected graduating students and retired teachers on June 21, 2006. The annual dinner is also used to recognize student recipients. Seattle. Education of the Alliance of Black School Educators. Students are selected from high schools in the Seattle Schools. The criteria used to select students include examining the student’s academic record, participation in school activities, participation in community service, financial need of the student, and the subject matter. These scholarships will be used to further the education of students. This year’s dinner will also honor five retired members of the Seattle Schools. These retirees are being honored for their outstanding service and dedication to Seattle Schools.

SABSE is part of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). NABSE is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the education of tribal children – especially children of African descent. In 1970 NABSE was founded to advance the education and achievement of African American youth through the development and implementation of instructional and motivational strategies that increase inspiration, attendance and achievement. NABSE aims to achieve its goals by leading the education of all students, especially African American students; establishing a partnership of African American teachers, administrators and other professionals directly and indirectly in education; create a forum for the exchange of ideas and ways to increase opportunities for African American teachers and students; identify and develop African American scholars who will become academic leaders and guide public policy related to African American education. These groups hope to influence students in Seattle Schools to recognize the importance of African American contributions to the United States.
