Ever Consider a Taste Testing Job?

Imagine your dream job? Would it involve tasting good food? As hard as it may be to believe, people actually make money as foodies.

There are two basic types of food enthusiasts in the food industry. The prototypes are often used by a manufacturer who wants to test a product before it goes to market. These testers will also work to ensure that existing products cannot be duplicated. This type of food taster is often called a “supertaster.” Supertasters are people who have a strong sense of taste.

Although it may seem like a good job to be a big fan – let’s say of tasting chocolate all day – in reality the number of tests that can be done is limited. Most testers only taste a few samples so they don’t have to eat bon bons all day. This is because their taste buds can get “fatigued” after the same taste so they don’t work as well at the end of the day as they did at the beginning of the day.

The second type of sweet is your average person who has a taste. Companies want to know from the general public how the product is liked because most people (ie consumers) are not very picky.

Foodies tend to do certain things, but you can live a healthy life by tasting things like cheese, olive oil, coffee, tea, jam, sauces, ice cream and more. Those who use the most wine are called “sommeliers.”

So how do you get one of these jobs? Obviously, well-known professionals who are already chefs and who have a degree in Food Science will have an advantage in these jobs, but since ordinary people are also needed, you should look at the quality assurance and research departments of each major food manufacturer. Good restaurants and hotels can also provide such facilities as well as some university laboratories. Food testers can make from $23,000 to $47,000 per year depending on the region of the country and expertise. And if you have ideas, dog food testers can make around $40,000 a year.

Although these jobs may be difficult to find – they are not impossible to find. Keep your eyes open, check all the sources, but don’t ignore the weird stuff like Craigslist. A few years back someone was advertising a food allergy so you never know. Often it’s just a matter of knowing that this type of work is there to be done.

Supertasters and taste buds are in demand in the food industry so there is room for everyone. Personally, I think I’d rather be a chocolate lover. This seems like a great way to make money. I think I will be able to enjoy many other hobbies slowly. Mmmn – a long ice cream lick would be a good job. But I think I’ll leave the dog food experiment to someone else!
