Cultural Appropriation Warriors
There seems to be a new group of people out there, and I like to call them Cultural Appropriation Warriors. These are people who go against their culture, or adopt customs and outsiders. They feel that everything about their culture should not leave their group. These are some of the most cohesive people I’ve ever heard.
Recently, there were dances and other types of music that have been known to people of African American culture, which caused a fire among some people who feel that they should not give up their traditions. Meaning, people of different races should not use these artworks in their own work. Instead of pride, he was filled with disgust. Although I understand the frustration if something of your culture is mocked and insulted, the idea that no one outside of his race has the right to do so, is just. ignorant and short. How far will we take this? Should I be upset that yoga, which is native to India, has been adopted by non-Indians and is becoming a world phenomenon? As I travel the world, can’t I enjoy more culinary delights? Can’t I learn to cook food from other countries? If I’m watching a traditional dance of another culture, can’t I choose to be interested and learn on my own? Should I not travel at all? Shouldn’t I teach anyone about my culture?
These questions may seem pointless, but for some they seem like a natural way of thinking. One day we will wake up and just sit in our little boxes, surrounding ourselves with people who think like us, act like us and look like us. The beauty of this country is that we are a multitude of cultures that come together, creating a beautiful collective bond. Yes, I understand that there is a lot of controversy in the world about this. For now, I choose to focus on the positive.
When we think of a special culture, when it is often associated with a certain race or another, there is no solid meaning that cannot be removed from the imaginary box in which we put it. ours are other people’s cultures and don’t let them make a beautiful melting pot. We don’t allow diversity to thrive.
Why do we still have to paint ourselves and others in pre-existing images that reflect a stereotype. While I understand that stereotypes exist and are often true, putting them on people we don’t know is easy. We hear words like: This person is not black enough, not hispanic enough or not Asian enough, etc. I, myself, have been told that I don’t act like an Indian and I should. I’m sorry I don’t fold my hands, bow my head and speak in Indian while wearing Indian clothes and a headdress. Amazing! Not really sorry. If you expect this from me, then you will be very disappointed.
What does it even mean to tell someone that they don’t act like their race? Should a person act according to his race? So why do we act like the people we are on the inside regardless of the color of our skin or where we come from? That sounds pretty good to me.
It is the people who put us all in our own ruts like this that divide people in this world. They cause conflicts, hatred and problems that do not need to exist. If you feel this way; if you are against cultural sharing, then just go back to yourself and separate yourself from the rest of us as we continue to love, embrace and spread our cultures around the world. If you believe this is a problem, then the problem is YOU. Excuse me now, while I enjoy my Mediterranean meal, Italian dessert, Mexican beer, and finish my night watching an American comedy.
