Beach Wedding Cake Toppers & Beach Wedding Cakes

If you are planning a beach wedding, you may be interested in beach wedding cakes.

Beach weddings are often destination weddings, a popular choice for many couples who are looking to wrap up their honeymoon with one wedding, or have a small, intimate and affordable affair. First of all, getting married near the beach is very popular, and it can make your wedding experience and your memories, even more special.

If you are a bride looking for beach wedding cakes, what designs should you look for? What design makes a cake “beachy”? Well, it depends on many things. It depends on the couple’s behavior, preferences and interests. It depends on the theme of the event, the time of year, the shape and layout of the venue… just to name a few. To get some ideas on which cake would be perfect for your beach wedding, we’ve put together a bunch of ideas below:

Sea Shell Cakes – You can’t go wrong with sea shells on a beach wedding cake. So which bullets? Periwinkle beads, Florida cone, and maculated ear moon, are some of the most beautiful seashells for decoration. Small pieces of coral are another good choice. Sea shells can be real (wash them well!), or they can be made from different types of icing, plasticine or chocolate. Seashells can be used as a cover or as a custom design. A group of shells, like a seashell cake cover is essential in making this cake.

Seafood Seafood – Include fascinating sea creatures, such as anemones, turtles, tropical fish, sea lions, jellyfish, starfish, dolphins, whales, or sea horses. We had a wedding in Monterey a few years ago, and the reception was at the Monterey Plaza Hotel – which is right next to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The entire wedding party visited the aquarium the day before the wedding, had a private tour and had a great time. The aquarium was the perfect inspiration for the theme of the cake. The cake maker cleverly incorporated marine life from the aquarium to the salt. On top of it was a large pearl studded with jewels and pearls, protruding from the sides of the cake. (not real pearls, but fun balls with pearl dust!)

Surf Cakes – Waves crashing around the cake is the perfect way to create a wave themed cake. This type of cake is perfect for couples who go swimming, or just love the waves. Waves can be bubbling liquid waves, or just the clear appearance of ripple-like ice. Adding blue to the cake can help make it look like an ocean. Airbrushing blue on the cake frosting, gives really good blended, and real results. Add some surfboards or filter sculptures as your cake topper, and you’re set.

Tropical Flower Ferments – Hibiscus, cymbidiums, tuberose, or whatever you like. They can be used as the top of a flower cake, they can go down the bottom of the cake or tiers, or they can be used in less than one. Hot flowers can also cover the cake completely, or be used on the base. Wherever they are placed, they dress up the cake in a beautiful and unsightly way – and make it look and smell great.

Sandcastle Cakes – Sandcastles on wedding cakes, often used as a topper. But, we have seen whole cakes made like castles, or the top half of a cake made like a castle, with small pieces of wedding cake underneath. To make the sand, the cake can be sprinkled with fine graham crumbs or brown sugar.

Palms and Coconut Breads – To remind you of your beautiful place, how about the subtle pattern of palm leaves surrounding the outer cake? A few coconuts as decorations? How to cook a cake oasis? What about the broken half of a coconut as the top of a cake, with the figures of the bride and groom singing in it, as if it were a hammock?

An Expensive Cake – You don’t have to be in the Caribbean to get rid of this. The top can be a treasure box with gold coins and jewels coming out of it, falling down the side of the cake. If you are in love with Pirates, make cake toppers in the image of the bride and the bride … one like Captain Jack Sparrow, and a beautiful maiden in her wedding dress, of course.

Bamboo and Tiki Cake – Dress the outer layers of the cake with cakes made to look like bamboo. You can also include Tiki masks. We once went to a luau wedding and the cake had little tiki lights that came out of the top, and circled the cake on the table. As the bride and groom cut the cake, tribal drums played in the background.

Ocean Activity Cake – Do you like to go snorkeling, fishing, diving, sailing, or kayaking? What about the statues of the bride and groom fishing wedding rings out of a hole? This would be easy to incorporate into the cake pan, but don’t forget that the shapes can be anywhere on the cake! Be creative! Some of your favorite seafood can be incorporated into your cake.

Sea Bird Cake – Sea birds flying, lovingly, with their long necks forming a heart. Best as a cake topping, but can be incorporated into a cake as well if seabirds are your thing.

Lighthouse Cakes – Is your wedding near a well-lit building? We’ve seen a lot of lighthouse cakes, but we also had a customer who made an entire cake like a lighthouse. One customer had the bottom two layers of the cake as a circle, and the top half of the cake was the lighthouse and the surrounding area, all the way to the ports below.

Sand Cakes – Not real sand! Many cooks use crushed crumbs, such as graham crackers, or brown sugar. The bottom of the cake can be covered with “sand”, or the top of any visible line… or the whole cake! What we like, is when a pile of “sand” is made on the bottom of the cake and spread on the table a few inches around. Something can be written in the sand, for example, “Charlie and Beth Forever”, or “CV + BE, 9/12/08”. You got the picture.

Nautical dishes – Go Nautical! Anchors, ropes, buoys, wooden docks, life rings, etc. These can be made from marzipan, sprinkled carefully around the cake, placed as a base, or used as a cake cover.

Beach Vacation Cakes – Our favorite beach wedding cake is two Adirondack chairs as a topper, with two flops underneath. Photos of the bride and groom sitting on chairs are optional. A regular beach or lounge chair can also be used instead of the Adirondacks. One of our favorites was a picture of a bride and groom sleeping in a hammock as big as a cake topper, with sand and small beer bottles underneath.

Swimming Pool Cakes – Not real water, we promise! Imagine this: on top of a cake made to look like an infinity swimming pool. This can be done by cutting the edge of the cake (like a router would cut the edge of a table), to create an infinite pool. Headshots of the bride and groom can take place on top of the pool, with shades and sunhats, with cocktails!

Hawaiian food – How about leis as a cake topper? Or the bride’s hula statue seducing the groom on top of the cake? The cake can be wrapped in a sarong, or a beach umbrella, Hawaiian cocktails, pineapples, or anything Hawaiian can be included.

Colorful Beach Cakes – Just want to use beach colors? Have white, purple, white, purple, and blue. The use of blue can be as subtle as the color of the frosting, or airbrushed on the outside of the cake to give it a nice look or feel.
